So the laptop is in Automatic Repair loop. Fast boot and secure boot are disabled in BIOS and the machine recognises the USB because if it isn't plugged in, it doesn't come up. I've set it to boot from USB first with HDD 2nd - no go. I've tried USB first and no other option - nothing. Finally managed to get the boot option menu come up (not BIOS) - still nothing.
What am I missing? I can't boot from a DVD as this machine doesn't have one

Try pressing F8 on the Asus splash screen this should call the boot menu.
