Solved Typing in the Start Screen doesn't work/Can't search

Hello,

I find when I press the Windows key, or open the Start Screen and start typing, nothing happens. Usually the sidebar opens with search results, but recently it has stopped working completely. Also, the search charm on the sidebar, and the search button on the Windows 8.1 (update) Start Screen do not work either--when I press them, nothing happens.

I spent a couple of hours looking for a solution to this problem, but with no luck. At first I thought it was a Windows Search service that had stopped working, so I restarted them, but the problem persisted.

I appreciate any help!

Go to Indexing Options in the control panel, advanced button and trouble shoot. You can also rebuild the index

I am using Windows 8.1 Pro. DISM completed successfully. I am now running sfc /scannow.

EDIT: Can you explain a bit more on how GPO would allow me to fix this problem? Thank you for the help.

With GPO. You can go in and edit certain items that you cannot with home version of Windows. Stuff like the LLTD, QOS, etc.. Also you can adjust policies for your user profile on security for folders.

Technet.microsoft.com has a lot of good information on using the GPO to your advantage on a stand alone computer. It mostly gets into using Windows on a Domain. But stuff like Firewall profiles and other things come in handy.

Usually when the OS gets corrupted. You tend to get that error you got. WER.dll is related to Windows Error Reporting. Thus the WER. You can try a Registry repair, or reinstall wer.dll. Sometimes Malware can cause the problem.

If SFC /scannow does not work. You may have to do a Repair install. Make sure you back up any important documents, video's, etc..
