Most techies agree that these types of programs only lighten your wallet and are not needed. "Tune up", "repair" "registry cleaner" "speed up PC" or whatever you want to call them are in this category.

I have been using this program for years, it has a multitude of features and controls. I never had any problems with it but I do not use the defragmentation feature, I let Windows handle that. They have been taken over by AVG and it is now know by AVG TuneUp and have noticed no change.

I do not use any "Tune Up" applications. They tend to be a mixed bag of functionality that Windows already has, functions that are potentially dangerous (registry cleaners) and those that are worse than useless (memory "optimizers").

The commercial varieties are primarily a means of parting the buyer from his money.

I never tried that one, but back in 2011, I got a wild hair and tried various(IOBIT, Glary, Wise...etc.) "optimizing suits" with Windows 7, they never bricked my computer, but thank Bill Gates I had a windows system image back-up. I only had one at a time installed, and for a week or so, with the placebo effect, my system "felt" faster, but after that it was always down hill.
After reading up on serious site and forums and not download sites or company propaganda I learned that many of them ignore windows APIs and tha can trash your system. Now I only use CCLEANER(with new ugly UI) for one stop cleaning, but for registry I use regedit and only for large programs I uninstalled like the crapware that comes with a oem install. Also 3rd party defragmenters can be ignored because many are not VSS aware and some are only a sexy UI for windows own(the techno light show with pretty colored boxes), every few days windows defrag, in conjunction with prefetch, rearranges program code to the outside of the disk making booting and loading faster. See my signature. A desktop or program crash sure but not one BSOD since I stopped using optimizers.

I have windows set to optimize(defrag HDD & trim SSD) disks every day as it only does it if needed. Also I almost forgot(I've only been using windows 8.1 for a couple of months) in Action Center is "Maintenance" set for every day too, which runs all the background system optimisation the system needs!

If its just defragging then why not try Defraggler as a stand alone programme.

Actually 2 version by AVG one is a yearly subscription and other is unlimited. I have used this too, one of best feature i like was it disables program when not in use, then re-enables them for use, nice feature you do not have to permanently disable them, never really messed with registry tool. Most of these softwares are not dangerous unless you do not know what you are doing and careless. Won't let me defrag anyway, cause have a SSD.

Yes, but usually they are people, who never even tried it, they review it based on common rumors.
It is like saying, that all cars suck, because someone once tried an unbranded car and it did not work.
Actually people, who tried tuneup apps were mostly satisfied, except people, who experiment too much.
They tend to be a mixed bag of functionality that Windows already has, functions that are potentially dangerous (registry cleaners) and those that are worse than useless (memory "optimizers").
Windows provides basic functionality, you can use basic Notepad or you can use Notepad++. Registry cleaners solve problems (as proven on this forum as well), that can be usually fixed only by reinstal. Memory optimizers actually works, Cleanmem on Vista saved me a lot of money, when all "experts told me, that the only option is to buy more RAM, because I was unable to run some games, due to insufficient RAM messages.
