I noticed, Kevin, about your location. Are you really in Indonesia? You speak better English than I can speak French. English is primary, but my ancestors are from Canada and originally from France. Ha ha ha Don't take it seriously. I avoid the term fluent as behind the scene I many times edited my post to have it less scrambled.

I am of course familiar with medical terms because you know it I'm a nurse. Even spent 3 years working two mental hospital in Saudi Arabia.

Talking about language difficulties. English is not alone. I do write, read, and speak some Arabic. It also has it own curves. I believe other languages too.

Yeah. I do live here. Indonesia, a country that is many times being referred as among third countries in the world. Found it out when I worked abroad. But here, I love this country, and internet eventually had erased any seal among countries and nations. I continue learning English by reading much posts in this very Forums (and play some words ). Also admiring those who are not from English speaking country but are able to speak freely (totally fluent English).

I have some knowledge about Canada in which to some area, French being the origin. But hey everybody managed to exist as I noticed, let's say Michael Buble, Josh Groban, even the newly famous kids Justin (hope I'm right). I was impressed when Celine (Dion) said to David Foster in a show how she start her singing career with poor English, but see what Celine ever been then? Marvelous.

Oops. Long enough. At least Today thread's been filled with some chats.

In Indonesia if ones want to speak English they have to go to English course and pay an extra budget for it. The formal education won't help us having enough English for speaking with confidence

I can see that. But I ever worked with many nurses from your country, they spoke perfect English, just some were with little Urdu dialect.

I saw some friends from India, Srilanka, and Bangladesh writing letters in Urdu but never have opportunity to speak about.

Reading and writing Arabic those time were among the priorities since we had to use it in daily work especially in dealing with patients who speak no English.

I don't know Urdu myself, anyway.

Urdu is very similar, very very similar to Hindi, which I know, India's national language in fact. So, I can understand Urdu speech (not written text) to some extent. Written Urdu is completely different from hindi script.

My mother tongue, however, is Bengali.

You all do a great job! :thumb: I would imagine it's not only the memorization of words and alphabet of different languages, but it's also the syntax of subject, verb, pronouns, and adjective order so far as sentence structure goes.

I'm an American mutt. 1/4 Slovak, which my sir name comes from, and 1/4 Polish on my fraternal side. Those grandparents came from Warsaw and settled in Chicago right before WWI. Maternally 1/4 French and 1/4 English. My mother's maiden name was Frizzell. They came to the U.S. via Canada and settled in the state of Missouri many generations ago. I know very few Polish phrases. I don't know the other two.

Today is a good day even though it's raining. I've got my java, calling my children, catching up on emails and the like, and cruising the forum and posting. What could be better?

Today I had to tell a friend that I thought he was addicted to pain killers he takes for the pain he has do to a bad hip. Not an easy task I must say, for they live in denial. He's been putting off a replacement for about a year now. A few other friends have noticed that he hasn't been himself as well as we talked in conversations. He's been very touchy and resentful. Not at all like him.

I'm talking very hard narcotics and now from a few doctors. Not a good sign at all! I think he would rather live in the pain just so he can take the drugs, if that makes any sense. They'll do anything just for the high. Bummer indeed for he's a nice guy!
