This will be Microsofts biggest ever flop, far bigger than Vista.

Ctrl + Shift + N

I like the ribbon. Two things that I use it for that are quicker for me on a regular mouse/keyboard interface are to create new folders and delete files/folders. One click at top, instead of right click in open area (or on highlighted items) then left click to precisely point then choose.

Try "Ctrl + Shift + N" for new folders.

In answer to the question for this thread, "time will only tell". For me, I don't plan on pre-ordering Windows 8 as I did Windows 7. There is nothing here that wows me, like Win 7 did. Will I ever get it? Oh I'm sure I'll buy a new PC and it will come pre-loaded, but not due to my request.

I think Windows 7 will become the new Windows XP. People like it and see no reason to change.

Will this version be another Windows Millennium? It could be, but we'll see later this year how people react to the release.

I'm on 7 now, and will likely use that when I'm on here, where there is no ribbon. Thanks, pretty cool!

Pinky for Ctrl + Shift, Thumb or probably better, index finger for N

Interestingly enough that keyboard combo is used in Nautilus (in Ubuntu 10.04).

I don't know when it was introduced in Windows.
I only discovered it by accident ~6 months ago.

I agree Greg. What amazes me although it shouldn't because this has always been the case, how there is no acknowledgement at all from Microsoft that there are objections to the way Metro UI is being shoved down peoples' throats whether they want it or not and if there is going to be a desktop, you might as well leave it as it was, with a Start Button and Menu. At least when these forums were newsgroups there was sometimes a begrudging post here and there from MSFT MVP's agreeing with people, or at least sympathizing and offering to pass their complaints back. I vaguely remember seeing a grand total of 1 post from actual Microsoft staff in all the years of using them.
All I've seen so far with Windows 8 is "tough, put up with it" although I realize it's early days. Maybe by final release someone will have listened, but I doubt it.
Ironically I could almost handle all of this if only they'd give back the ability to circumvent Windows default method of installing hardware drivers and allow no passkey entry for Bluetooth keyboards for example because it ruins the experience for multi-boot people like me, but that darned Metro UI kicks in at every turn and I hate it.
Give us a switch off please!!

Hi there
Tablets and smart phones need a type of Metro interface.

PC's still will be around for the foreseeable future with people entering data into classical applications like word documents, power point, spread sheets and so on -- these can't be done in any reasonable manner if at all with a touch screen -- even if you were to attempt this your arms would soon get tired and your nose would almost be touching the screen -- not the best way of operating a computer.

Scrolling leftwards for around 7 KM to access or find an application is also a no no on a PC. that whole system needs to be looked at again.

I don't mind at all the basic idea but the whole metro idea needs to be re-thought for a PC.

Similarly you often need multiple windows on a large monitor open simultaneously and have easy multi monitor support.

Metro seems to be only single full screen mode -- OK again for smartphones and tablets but not for PC.

I like W8 but currently I'll only use it with the "Windows to Go" feature -- and that's only available in Enterprise. (So TechNet / Work).

If I can't get hold of Enterprise then I'll stick with W7 unless they DO change the metro interface somewhat at least for classical desktop / laptop users who in spite of Ipads etc aren't going away any time soon.

cheers

Maybe this is all part of a "long game" by MS and that they (maybe) know that W8 will get a hostile reception from the likes of folk such as ourselves but that it is a path they feel they need to go down to change the fundamental way we use PC's.

As has been said before, 95% (or whatever the figure is) of sales of W8 will come from new PC's with W8 preinstalled. Of all those buying new PC's I would guess it's only a very small minority that would be comfortable saying no to Windows and knowing where and how to look elsewhere for alternatives.

Maybe MS see this as the right time to make that fundamental change to Windows while they still have a monopoly, and to work on the problems with future Windows releases and more suitable hardware. If they don't progress and make that initial start then someone else will jump in and overtake them.

That's not to say I like W8, in its present form I don't, but I am happy to watch what happens and make a choice of OS based on what suits me.

Remember MS is in this to make money and they can not stand still.

i guess if you have a touch screen monitor ... windows 8 is very easy to use once you get used to it...
the whole point of removing the start and bringing in the big large tiles and the side shut down panels is "FUTURE PROOFING" for touch based devices..

imagine using the start button on a tablet.. it sucks... its too small , i wont be able to touch what i want...

the whole point of the shut down being hidden away and other things like network settings and control panel being hidden away is to not make people use accidentally while touching , and because Microsoft knows that in the years to come people dont want to know what is happening behind under the hood of the big flashy tiles that is the UI of windows 8, nobody even needs a "file explorer" ... they want everything to be automatic and easy...well it actually is , use any touch based phone.. people hardly use a file explorer... they have and want everything right on their home screens(plural since there are more than one ;) )

the concept of all windows so far is its basically used a "file explorer" view with everything listed .. well with the coming of touch based devices that is becoming harder and harder to use..

you and i might find it difficult to accept this new UI since we cant live without our mouse and explore and tinker with settings and other things under the hood, but the people who use touch based devices will welcome it ...

more and more people want simplicity and dont want to knw whats happening under the hood... and thats exactly what micosoft is telling us...

for those who use the old "MOUSE AND KEYBOARD" and the traditional PC use windows 7 ..

and when the new touch based PC and tablets come out... use Windows 8 cause by then they would have ironed out all the quirks that the current widows 8 CP has .

Why should those people update in the first place?

Because their PC becomes obsolete with time, where can you purchase a Windows XP today? They are forced to change. Anyway just wait to see the results of the sales, we will know who is right and wrong. I'm still installing Windows XP in new Dell pcs, business purchases, if I say no they gone ask someone else.

Right or wrong? Miss the point much? It's about CHOICE. That's all.

In the Washington, Dc area Metro is the train transit system. In my opinion Metro being forced onto PC users is a train wreck!

Sometimes in order to move forward there has to be some casualties. I have been using windows and computers since the days of BBC Basic and have always gone with change. I will say I was a tad frustrated with the interface initially, but once I started working my way around it I am starting to like it. The biggest issue with the desktop is the lack of multitouch drivers that can take advantage of the interface. Once synaptics and others get their beta drivers out, Windows 8 will feel much better.

As stated before the potential for increased productivity for business as well as home users is massive. Full screen apps, multiple desktops and the fastest core windows that has ever been produced.

Ask yourself one question, is your glass half full or half empty?

Half-full, half-empty doesn't matter when all they're serving is piddle.

Five CEOs Who Should Have Already Been Fired (Cisco, GE, WalMart, Sears, Microsoft)

#1 – Steve Ballmer, Microsoft. Without a doubt, Mr. Ballmer is the worst CEO of a large publicly traded American company today. Not only has he singlehandedly steered Microsoft out of some of the fastest growing and most lucrative tech markets (mobile music, handsets and tablets) but in the process he has sacrificed the growth and profits of not only his company but “ecosystem” companies such as Dell, Hewlett Packard and even Nokia. The reach of his bad leadership has extended far beyond Microsoft when it comes to destroying shareholder value – and jobs.

Hi there
No wonder call centres from this part of the world have passed their sell buy date.

Don't you guys ever understand that inputting stuff on to say an EXCEL spreadsheet is JUST NOT ON via a touch screen monitor.

Can't say anymore or I might be accused of stuff I don't want to get involved in
but PLEASE try inputting data via a touch screen on a large monitor -- your arms will get very tired and your nose will be almost touching the screen even if you could enter a complex mathematical formula via a touch screen..

Come out of the "I.T" towers and see how REAL USERS enter data.

Cheers
jimbo

Steve Ballmer is correct. Microsoft is NOT a hardware company, it is a software company, and everything you basically said Paul revolves around PCs, Microsoft's tiny Hardware division (Computer Mouse, 360, keyboard) wouldn't be harm in anyway by those hardware products, Microsoft DID indeed have a tablet based computer set out to put in the marketplace, but the tester thought it would hold no competition for the iPad, and the other tablets that are already there.
