System Volume Information owner and permission

Thank!! I changed ownership to Administrators and permissions to SYSTEM with full control and now I can create restore point. I have still some folders/files inside it with owner SYSTEM not Administrators (WindowsImageBackup, IndexerVolumeGuid, tracking.log)

I have TreeSize free but I not using it for long time so I forget about it.

Good to hear that you got it sorted. Don't worry about those files. As long as you can create the restore point and Windows was able to update those files then you're in good shape.

Had you deleted the folder, you would end up with an empty "System Volume Information" folder and eventually those log files will be created once a Restore Point is created.

Cheers.

Hello,
Although this morning I managed to create a restore point, but when I want to create a restore point just now, the access denied message come up again, and I have problems when delete the folder to recreate it even I take ownership.

I checked each files/folders permissions using TreeSize Free.
SPP - Same as SVI permissions and owner
SystemRestore - Same
WindowsImageBackup - Owner SYSTEM, permissions same
IndexerVolumeGuid - Same as WindowsImageBackup
MountPointManager.... - Same as SVI
tracking.log - Owner SYSTEM permissions only SYSTEM full control (I think this is causing the problem)
SPP\OnlineMetadataCache - Same as SVI
SPP\SppCbsHiveStore - owner SYSTEM permissions same as SVI
SPP\SppGroupCache - same as sppcbshivestore
SystemRestore\FRStaging - owner admins permission SYSTEM full control and admins full control
WindowsImageBackup\OnlineMetadataCache - owner SYSTEM permissions SYSTEM full control
SPP\OnlineMetadataCache\...........OnDiskSnapshotProp - owner admins permissions SYSTEM and admins full controlSPP\SppGroupCache\......DriverPackageInfo - owner SYSTEM permissions SYSTEM full control
SPP\SppGroupCache\....WindowsUpdateInfo - owner SYSTEM permission SYSTEM full

Hope someone can help me. Recommend use TreeSize to check security easily.

Read post #4 above. You can't delete the folder while Windows is running, that's why I gave the link to download: Slacko Puppy Linux release

Thank you. But I don't know where to copy my personal data like documents and pictures, and I only have a USB drive and no CD/DVD, any other way? Or check post #26 to check if it same as yours?

Recommended use TreeSize to check.

Since slacko is only 160MB in size, you'd need a USB thumb drive, 1GB is fine to create a bootable USB stick.
Sorry but I never use System Restore and never will and have it turned off so the System Volume Information folder in my PC is empty.
FYI, System Restore Point is not a good way to restore your system and often become corrupted and in addition, will slow down your system due to the background process is always running. I use: Macrium Reflect Free to make a complete backup of my Windows OS instead.

@David,
No offend but What's you have shown there is incorrect and I know in the past you did Take over the ownership of this folder but this is wrong and open a big security hole that virus can sneak in there and infect it.

I deleted it & restarted & got this---

I didn't change it, I just viewed it.

@David,
Very good. And since I know you are using Macrium to do your backup, you don't really need to turn on the System Restore. I never use it and never will. One less resource to slow down my PC, less disk space. In addition, as said earlier, System Restore is not reliable and often corrupted. It is very good point that you advise people to always use Macrium to do the backup.
Cheers !!!

Give this a try:

Reset the Repository. To do so follows these steps:
  1. Boot into Safe Mode without networking and open a command prompt as administrator.
  2. Now Type net stop winmgmt and hit Enter. This will stop the Windows Management Instrumentation Service
  3. Next go to C:\Windows\System32\wbem and rename the repository folder to repositoryold
  4. Restart.
Again open a command prompt as administrator, type net stop winmgmt and hit Enter.Next type winmgmt /resetRepository and hit Enter.Restart.Now see if you can create a System Restore Point manually.
