System Repair Disc - Create in Windows 8

How to Create a "System Repair Disc" (CD/DVD) in Windows 8

information   Information
This will show you how to create a system repair disc (CD/DVD) in Windows 8 to use to boot to the system recovery options that can be used to help recover Windows 8.

Note   Note
A system repair disc is not the same as OEM factory recovery/restore/repair disc.

A system repair disc cannot be used to install Windows 8.

A created 32-bit system repair disc can only be created in a 32-bit Windows 8, and used to repair a 32-bit Windows 8.

A created 64-bit system repair disc can only be created in a 64-bit Windows 8, and used to repair a 64-bit Windows 8.

warning   Warning
Windows 8.1 no longer supports being able to create a system repair disc CD/DVD using the method in this tutorial.

If you like, you can also boot from your Windows 8.1 installation media or from a created recovery drive (USB) for the system recovery options.

EXAMPLE: System Recovery Options
NOTE:
After you boot from the system repair disc, you will need to select your language and keyboard layout (if displayed) for Windows 8, then select Troubleshoot to see the system recovery options.

E) Click/tap on the Create a system repair disc with a CD or DVD instead link, and go to step 4 below. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: You will not see this link if you have a USB flash drive connected. You'll need to either use step 2 or disconnect all USB drives and start over with step 3.
Drive-2b.jpg

4. Click/tap on Create disc. (see screenshot below)
Step-3.jpg

5. The system repair disc will now start to be created. (see screenshot below)
Step-4.jpg

6. When finished, remove your CD/DVD, label it properly for your 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 8 Repair Disc, and click/tap on Close. (see screenshot below)
Step5.jpg

7. Click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)
Step-6.jpg

8. If you used step 3, then you can now close any remaining opened windows from it.

That's it,
Shawn

Is there a place to download a system repair disk to burn to dvd? I cannot create the system disk because I do not have a recovery partition. This was removed manually after I made my HP recovery disks. I can restore the entire system to factory defaults but all I want to do is re-fix the MBR because I need to get rid of Grub. ( of course Windows loads fine under Secure Boot and UEFI) I had forgotten the the HP recovery disks do not function as repair disks so I forgot to make those also.

I also read that if you have an HP system with preinstalled Windows 8, you will not have the ability to create a system repair disk from Windows as the above shows, only the HP recovery disks. I don't know how true that is because i didn't try it before removing the recovery partition.

Perhaps another option is to get a Windows 8 install disk and use the recovery options in there? ( I do have access to my product key)

Will DaRT 8 (Microsoft Diagnostics and Recovery Toolset) running from a dvd do this? Microsoft DaRT - Diagnostics and Recovery Tools, Repair | TechNet

Hello Dark Rider,

If you have a Windows 8 installation disk, then you could use OPTION SEVEN in the tutorial below to boot to the Startup Options...

http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/4935-startup-options-menu-boot-windows-8-a.html

.... then select "Troubleshoot" to be in the "System Recovery Options" screen in OPTION ONE of the tutorial below. This is what a System Repair Disc will take you to.

I don't currently have a normal Windows installation disk, just the HP recovery disks that wont work for this. Where can I download a normal Windows Installation Disk? Unlike Windows 7, it doesn't seem like Digital River is offering the downloading of the ISO's.

Could I use the free Windows 8 Enterprise 90-day evaluation version?

On Windows 8 64 bit, you are now forced to use a USB if you attempt to create a recovery CD/DVD via Control Panel, Recovery. There's no option (as above) to 'Create a system repair disk with a CD or DVD instead' as in the graphic above. But you can do it with Windows key+R and type recdisc. Hope this is useful.

Hello Nigel, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I'm not sure what you mean. Using step 3 is still available in both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 8.

It's recdisc and not recdisk though.

First of all, sorry about recdisk (wrong) versus recdisc (right). If an administrator/editor/senior member can correct that please it'll save confusion.

Thank you Brink for giving me the opportunity to clarify about creating a recovery disk via Control Panel, Recovery. On page 1 of this thread, i.e. http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2855-system-repair-disc-create-windows-8-a.html, paragraph 3. E) the screenshot shows the 'Recovery Drive' screen, subtitled 'Connect a USB flash drive', with the option below to 'Create a system repair disk with a CD/DVD instead'. My screen (up to date Windows 8) is titled 'Recovery Drive', subtitled 'Select the USB flash drive' and doesn't have the option to 'Create a system repair disk with a CD/DVD instead'. I'll put the screen in and hope it transmits to everyone:-

Recovery drive screen without the option to create a CD or DVD in Windows 8 2nd attempt.jpg

(F:\ the Toshiba drive is just an external drive).

This doesn't surprise me as the book Windows 8 in depth by Knittel and McFedries page 769 has the same screen and talks only of a recovery drive on USB. They didn't have your extra knowledge about recdisc! Originally, it made me curse and buy a USB stick, as I find them less reliable than DVDs and more expensive, so I was pleased with your tip.
Any ideas please? I have tried the screen via copy and paste - it disappears, so I've attached it as a doc and attempted to create a jpg file of it and insert that, but the image on screen is tiny...
Regards,
Nigel

Nigel,

If you have a USB flash drive connected, then you will not see the Create a system repair disc with a CD or DVD instead link at step 3E. Please disconnect any USB drive, and start over to see if you see this link afterwards at this step. You can close the window to cancel it. :)

Thank you Brink for looking into this. I still don't get an option to create a CD or DVD recovery disk via the menus: Control Panel, Recovery, only via recdisc. For the screen below I detached my Toshiba external drive connected via USB, restarted Windows 8 and went into the menus I've just mentioned. This is the screen I get:-

Recovery drive screen still without CD or DVD option.jpg
For the record, I'm on standard Windows 8, not Windows 8 Pro, Enterprise or RT.
In a further twist, I tried a USB stick repeatedly. File Explorer finds it immediately as normal and can see the contents, Recovery cannot see it! ...and keeps asking for a USB stick to be inserted.
Best regards,
Nigel

Nigel,

I have this option in all Windows 8 editions. I just doubled checked in a Windows 8 (standard) virtual machine.

Is this on your desktop in your specs, or another PC?

Do you have a CD/DVD connected?

Forgive me, I didn't quite understand the question, but I'll say what I can:-
The PC is standard, as bought, Acer with Win8 pre-installed. The CD/DVD drive is integral, i.e. in the Acer box and was in the machine when bought. There's no network or virtual machine here.

I have a suggestion: If anyone rewrites this advice, just put something like "One contributor did not get the option to 'Create a system repair disk with a CD/DVD instead' on the Recovery Drive screen, but got it using recdisc." That'll cover it. Unless we could see the source code for the programs that run 'Recovery' we're unlikely to know exactly why it's doing this.

Best wishes and thanks for all your work on this.

No worries. That's already included as a note under step 3E in the tutorial to help. :)

Just a thought, but did you have anything connected in any of the USB ports. If so, disconnect it (other than for a keyboard/mouse) to see if by chance it may have been mistaken as a USB drive and caused you to not get the CD/DVD link.

Nigel,

Looks like using step 2 may be your only option for a System Repair Disc (CD/DVD). :(

I'm testing Windows 8.1 Preview, and both step 2 and 3 are not available anymore for CD/DVD. Hopefully they will be in the final release. Currently, only the option to create a recovery drive (USB) is available in Windows 8.1 Preview.
