I found two items in the "Found.000" folder, "systemIndex.1.crwl" and "systemindex.1.gthr" - This happened after I did a full GWscan and another CHKDSK on the drive which found errors.

It started booting like normal, but it showed "Preparing Windows" when it got to my Profile. When the system came up, it was loaded with some damn "Temporary Profile"

Any ideas on how I can restore my profile? I can't do anything with this. I do have access to System Restore, should I do that?

Yow! This bilge has been built in to Vista and 7 as well? That's some tutorial, some of it is not clear. Also, Administrator Account, seeing as how I've never been able to successfully get into Safe Mode in 8, this is gonna be a feat if I can pull it off.

I found this referred to on a Technet board, they suggest making a new user account and then moving everything from my user account folder into it, then deleting the old folder and renaming the new one, thats confusing too.

The Technet Article suggested running SFC /Scannow, I'm in the middle of that right now, it is taking a very long time, it is stuck at 100% of the verification phase. Nope, it didn't work which is as usual for what any MS MVP says, their advice is all wrong.

I managed to get into Safe Mode, but there was no damned Administrator option, and I KNOW I have it turned on.

Nope, it is still going into the temp profile, and it is NOT giving me any way to log in as Administrator.

DAMMIT! There is NO way in blazes I can get to the Administrator Account in any mode, I was only able to get into it in Command Prompt mode.

Any way to do this from the Command Prompt only?

In the meantime I'm going to try to set up a new user account and move everything over.

No, no way I am gonna do a Refresh.

I'll try an In-Place Install first.

Ah- The User Profile Service is Totally Hosed- Won't load a new user. So It's In-Place Install time :(

Hmmm - I think I know why the Administrator is not being shown, I have it hidden with Windows 8 Manager. I'll have to reinstall it to make it visible again

Allrightythen -It's going through the motions of adding a new user for the Administrator account! And it's NOT a temp profile! Now I'll try the method from the link when it is done. tHANX A LOT bRINK!

I had Windows Manger set to automatically log me in to my Skydrive account. So I shut off Auto Login feature and all of the other accounts show up in safe mode now. :) :)

I may send you a PM or two about one of the steps in the instructions.

IT WORKED!!

Ok, so do I restore the Reg entries I backed up? :)

I'm in no hurry, I gotta go to the store.

Also, there are all those NTUSER.DAT files in the root, do I move those back too?

I think I see what happened, the Profile Reg Keys for that account were ".BAK" - There were no keys for that account without the BAK on them. You think the reg keys for the account got deleted when I did Disk Scan?

I think the root cause were some CRWL and GTHR files that had been moved to "Found.000" - Those may have kicked my profile in the arse when they came up missing after I rebooted. There wer huge warnings in the App Events about those.

Great news.

No, you wouldn't want to copy or restore any of those back since they are no longer valid after a repair install or refresh.

OK -And I DONT restore the BAK keys either, right? I think that was the problem, all there were were BAK keys, no real ones.

So I guess I just log out of Admin and try the account now?

Correct. You wouldn't want to restore that either since it could corrupt the account.

Yep, it'll be time to see if you are able to sign in to the account again now. Fingers crossed.

It's like a WHOLE NEW MACHINE! As David Carradine said, "You're the man" (actually he said I'm the man but we'll let that slide)

Actually your guide was easy to follow once I read it through, I just did it step by step. I've got this extra local account now, I don't know if it works or not. My User folder was 120 GB! I was trying to save it onto my Media drive, but it was taking forever. Then I remembered if I just moved it to a different location, It would move almost instantly, so I did that. Then I moved each folder that was in there back separately including the AppData folders. Everything seems to be in place. And once I logged in, my Desktop Theme came back.

Yah your method was the best. Technet's was of course the worst. There was another one blogged by some guy, it was pretty similar to yours, but you had it explained a lot better.

When I make my tutorials I'll copy your style. Maybe I'll make one for this, specifically for 8, because there were a few extra steps.

Oh yah, I figured out how to get the Legacy Boot Choice and Safe Mode back, it was from a ZDnet guy. It still gives you access to the extra functions in 8 though. It's BCDedit /set {default} bootoptionsmenu legacy. I have no idea how to set it back though :)
