Try the option two in this tutorial, run sfc/ scannow at least 3 times. HTH.
EDIT: Check the CPU temps as well.

I ran ssfc /scannow 3 times. It found items the first run and not on the second 2. The problem persisted and got worse, with the PC shutting off every 30-40 min. When it happens the PC automatically restarts. Finally, while I was asleep, it happened to my wife and the PC failed to restart. When I woke up this morning the PC wouldn't even start. One major change I have made recently is to replace the video card. I took that out, made sure all of the cables were snug on the MB and now it is up and running. I also removed the MB battery removing the OC I had running although I don't think that was the problem as the crashes often happened during idle times when no one was using any programs. I am now waiting to see if it happens again in this new state minus the video card and the OC.

Hi samhfoley. Welcome to EightForums.

Is the CPU overheating? Cooling fans running? BIOS will shut it down if overheating.

RealTemp 3.7 shows my idle temps at 29-37 degrees C. That is with an overclock of 4.2MHz. I left my PC with the new video card removed and no OC for 3 hrs and it didn't shut off. I am now trying with a 4.2 O.C. and no external GPU. My system specs are
Win 8 Pro 64 bit
ASUS P8V77-V-Pro
Intel i7 3770K
the new video card is a Sapphire HD 7850 2G GDDR5 OC version

I see temps at a high of 56 when I open a bunch of programs at once.

seems to be fixed. Been running nonstop at 4.2 O.C. for 12 hrs. with new video card. I think there was a loose connection somewhere....
