1. Type mkdir /mnt/USB && mount /dev/sdx1 /mnt/USB (replacing xwith your actual usb device)
2. Type grub-install --force --no-floppy --root-directory=/mnt/USB /dev/sdx (replacing x with your actual USB device)
3. Type cd /mnt/USB/boot/grub

check if you typed /dev/sdg or /dev/sdg1 - should be /dev/sdg

sdg is the disk - sdg1 is the first partition - the drive volume

It is trying to install grub to the mbr - not the partition

I have just done the download and installation here (linux Mint)- I have not Kubuntu available

just try the sudo ./unetbootin-linux-*

If no success, close the terminal window and open a new one and try again
starting with

sudo su

Just try places, computer, home to see if unetbootin-linux-latest is there doubleclick to execute

unetbootin is not installed in the home folder then?

In the kubuntu system tools what is the graphical package manager? is it Synaptic, Adept or what? can you install from there?

i've just installed synaptic and still have no luck with unetbootin. can't install it.

Long day for me today - and it seems we can't take the USB situation further as it is.

Iatkos won't install, apparently, and you have no workable install media for installing Windows - so your only remaining option is to install Kubuntu into as small a partition as you can, and frankly you would be best to burn a DVD to install windows from - and either use it to repair or upgrade your broken windows installation.

How does that sound?

Since you weren't responding, I decided to try out stuff on ny on. Long story short, I managed to fix usb to get it to its original state. I've reformatted it and copied Win8cp iso to it, and utility to do it for windows 7 (from ms store) and copied that too. I'll ask a friend from work to 'burn' win8 to usb and then try cuz kubuntu won't format usb to fat32. Keep getting error on that.
Also kubuntu doesn't work well when installed. Every time I use sudo in terminal it asks for password(which can't be removed) and then it won't let me type in anything. It is still responsive, but I can't paste or type anything.

And, yes. If this fails, I'll have to install new windows over everything...
