Startup Items - Manage in Windows 8

How to Manage Startup Programs and Items in Windows 8 and 8.1

information   Information
Startup items are the programs, shortcuts, folders, drivers, etc... that are set to run automatically at startup when a user signs in to Windows 8. Startup items can be added by either the programs or drivers you install, or manually by you.

This tutorial will show you how to manage your startup items to add, delete, enable, and disable them in Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1.

Note   Note
When you first sign in to Windows 8, there will be a short delay (few seconds) before the added startup programs open by default.

See: How to Reduce the Startup Delay Time for Desktop Apps in Windows 8 and 8.1

Its wierd, suddenly STEAM, ORIGIN and PCMeter are loading at startup and I cant find them anywhere, through all 4 steps. The programs have the BOOT AT STARTUP option, UNCHECKED. yet, they all keep starting at boot.

*** Uninstalled PCMeter, but really dont want to remove steam and origin.

Hello VampireZIM, and welcome to Eight Forums.

In that case, you might check to see if they may either have a service or a task in Task Scheduler (taskschd.msc) set to run at startup.

Hope this helps, :)

You can also try autoruns from SysInternals - shows startup items, scheduled tasks etc all in one place...

My two cents worth CCleaner also has a start up option too and the other tabs give more:)

Sorry snip will not upload so just go to CCleaner click on Tools > Start up > you then have five tabs to pick stuff over from

I couldn't post a snip either - some bug on the forum? It showed previewing the post but not when submitted.

On Startup tab CC cleaner doesn't show services, drivers, codecs + about 10 other tabs. It does show Chrome extensions though which autoruns doesn't. Perhaps both is best.

Ok Adam mate I just had a look in my 8 laptop and yes there are only four tabs! In my net tab though I do notice a lot of the entries are doubled up for some reason??

But even so my laptop which is just on four years old is the fastest to boot and shut down of all my machines and all have SSD's

The snip well probably a small glitch somewhere.

hi
I have recently installed win 8 and at first I disabled some unwanted programs such as nero update from startup but after restarting windows I saw that process in process list. Does someone know the solution?

Hello arashs51, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Double check to make sure that it doesn't have any other entries in your startup programs list.

In addition, check the program's settings to see if it may have an option to not run at startup, and to not automatically check for updates.

It may also have a service set to run automatically. If so, you could stop it and set it to manual instead.
Hope this helps, :)

I'm having trouble getting 2 out of 3 programs to start at startup.

I've tried:
1. Adding a shortcut to startup folder
2. Confirm it is on CCleaner startup programs
3. Confirm it is listed under startup tab in task manager

I dont see the Run and RunOnce folders in Option 3 (registry settings)

Hello itisthumper, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Do these programs require to "Run as administrator" (elevated)?

If so, then that is the problem. Elevated programs are not allowed to run at startup by default in Windows for security reasons. A workaround for this would be to use the tutorial below to create an elevated shortcut that doesn't get a UAC prompt, then add that elevated shortcut into your Startup folder.

Elevated Program Shortcut without UAC Prompt - Create - Windows 7 Help Forums

Hope this helps, :)

Startup Shortcuts

I have a Surface Pro 2 with Windows 8.1 + Update. I am trying unsuccessfully to get startup shortcuts to work per Option Two above. I have a simple shortcut to run taskmgr.exe. If I copy this shortcut to either of these two directories, nothing happens at startup. It works fine with my Windows 7 laptop.
C:\Users\(User-Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

I have tried placing other shortcuts here as well. It seems that the "startup function" is not working.

I would appreciate any help.

David

Additional info: Surface is set to boot up at Start Page, but I move to Desktop immediately and wait for Startup Shortcuts to work, but with no success.

Hello David, and welcome to Eight Forums.

What's happening is that in an administrator account, Task Manager will "run as administrator" by default. Windows will not run an elevated program at startup by default, and is why nothing happens with in the Startup folder.

If you like, you can use the tutorial below to create an elevated shortcut for Task Manager, then place that elevated shortcut in the Startup folder to be able to have it run elevated at startup. :)

Startup Items in Windows 8

Brink, thank you for your response. I created the "elevated" shortcut per your tutorial named "My Task Manager".
The shortcut to the shortcut executes this: C:\Windows\System32\schtasks.exe /run /tn "My Task Manager".

I don't know what the "/tn" flag does.

The shortcut seems to work at startup at this location: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

But not at this location: C:\Users\(User-Name)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

I would like it to know how to make it work for "User-Name" only.

I don't recall having this problem in Windows 7. I thought I used ordinary shortcuts, copied into the Startup directory.

I would appreciate your advice.

David

Hey David,

The /TN flag is short for "Task Name". It's used to specify to run that task.

Did you set the program to "Run as administrator", or does it do this by default? If you set it to do so, then you could unset it, and it should run normally then.

Is there a way to see the registry locations of each start up program? In all other windows MSCONFIG on the start up tab always shows the locations. Windows 8 does not. It is frustrating as it is a vital tool I use in virus removal.
