Start Button Missing & understanding why

With Classic shell, I still have a start button and a menu, but the way I have it configured, if I move my mouse all the way to the corner (which is the technique Microsoft wants us to get used to) then the start screen icon overlays and clicking it brings me to the start screen. I think this is the best way to use Windows 8. It blends the new with the old in a way that enables the most amount of function and choice. That of course, is just my opinion...

I do that too.
The main thing I like about the classic start button is I can click on it & easily open multiple Windows Paint or other programs.
Sometimes I am editing a screen shot & need several Paint windows active.
Being able to SEE what needs to be done is better than explaining it in words.

medab1 - I agree with you 110% whole heartedly that being limited to one window of Paint or any program would make Windows 8 as whole, useless.
Without Classic Shell or any other 3rd party Start button hardware you can open multiple windows of any program in 8.

medab1 - thanks for rushing me a little. I was putting off adding more toolbars like I did in XP-7.
the main one is Graphics because even though I'm not good, I like to tinker with them.

musiclover7 - Not sure what you mean exactly with last comment. " That is all well and good, but for me it is not near as intuitive."
We've all got our preferences and I'm not trying to change yours.
My original post had one purpose. As members posted, I learned and shared more. Even you were a source.

"Yeah.. what about us lazy schloms who are kicking back in our easy chairs, browsing with just a mouse. Show me how to get to my apps with ease, using just a mouse. Or, as much ease as I used to have with the start menu.

I installed classic shell and I have the best of both worlds.

The only problem, is that classic shell is not as responsive as the native start menu would have been, and it lacks some of the features..

With Classic shell, I still have a start button and a menu, but the way I have it configured, if I move my mouse all the way to the corner (which is the technique Microsoft wants us to get used to) then the start screen icon overlays and clicking it brings me to the start screen. Your original post indicates ways of working around the lack of a start button using the keyboard, using means that were always available, even with the old start button in windows 7. I argue that the methods are less intuitive now, but that is just my opinion...

wpcoe made interesting comment about Start Panel and the Enter key.

The Enter key activates whatever tile you have in top left corner of Start Panel.
I have changed mine from Shutdown to Desktop.
Widows key for returning to Start Panel. Enter key for returning to Desktop.
It only gets better!

Start8 is a good rendition of the Win7 start menu as well.

I use Start8 and my Start menu is exactly like it was in Windows 7 and is fully customizable. Well worth $5. I just wish I knew how to make custom Start orbs for it.
