Solved SP3 Restarts randomly when in sleep mode.

I have a Surface Pro 3 running W8.1 with all updates installed. When I wake the computer from sleep mode, all my open programs are closed and the computer has restarted. In looking at system event logs it indicates that a Kernel-Power issue occurred and the system has restarted. I know of two others in my office that have similar problems. Thanks for you help.

What do you have in common with the other 2 systems? I'd especially look at wifi enabled programs.

Looks to me like a networking problem, most likely with something related to the wifi.
Please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions: Driver Verifier Settings
I suspect that something is interfering with the wifi, but it hasn't left any traces in the memory dumps.

Be sure that you have ALL available Windows Updates for this system.

I'd make sure that you submit reports when crashes happen - and that you stay on top of Windows Updates.
If it's a common problem with SP3's, then Microsoft should be staying up late to fix it.
And, if it is a Microsoft problem, then it's most likely in the wificlass.sys driver - so keep an eye out for updates for that one.

I resolved my problem. I'm not sure if this will work for you but it has worked for me. On closer examination I found that my restarts would occur anytime my system was asleep. It didn't happen every time it was asleep but only happened when asleep.
I found someone in a different forum suggested disabling hibernate mode. Hibernate doesn't show enabled on the normal control panel options. I had to use powercfg command to see that it was enabled. You can also use that command to turn hibernation on or off. I couldn't do it through the command because of permissions so I did it by changing a registry entry.
It's been a few days without one random restart, where before I had them a couple of times a day.
Here is how you can do it too.

  • Open a command promptwith administrator privileges.
  • powercfg /a - to see what your available sleep states are on your system.
  • powercfg /h on (or) powercfg /h off - Turns hibernation on or off.
This does however disable "Fast Startup."
I'm planning on enabling hibernation mode after every system update to see if the real problem has been resolved. If not, I'll turn it back off.
