Sound quiet all of a sudden in headphones.

So my PC just had a whole bunch of issues which seem unrelated, but there was a massive mess with a system restore and a whole bunch of updates and stuff, but I don't know why all of a sudden my headphones are really quiet, even on the maximum volume setting.

This is an issue with all sound devices I own. They work fine on other computers by the way, so it's most likely a PC issue.
Any possible explanation/fix for this?

For starters would be helpful to fill in system specs here or list them for us. What were all these other unrelated issues, which updates, windows or hardware, software ? What other spound devices we talking about stereo receiver ? Start by checking settings in software for sound card, then in Windows sound properties.

It's a windows 8.1 64 bit OS, intel core i5 4670k, 16384 mb of ram, directx11, GTx 670 card.

Sound: Headphones, HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0887&SUBSYS_14, type: WDM, default device: yes.

Not sure what else to supply

The updates installed were about 51 of them, so I don't know what all of them were, but they were a lot of Windows updates. The unrelated issues were that my PC would say "could not install updates, undoing changes" or something like that, then just restart and do the same again. So I did a system restore to March 22nd and then installed those 51 updates. After that my sound has been wonky.

First, please fill in the "My System Specs", not list them in a post. See mine for example.

Second, "HDAudio" suggests that only the generic, basic function, Windows sound driver is installed instead of the correct driver for your sound hardware (whatever that is as it is not listed). The correct sound driver may fix the headset problem.

Have integrated sound card on motherboard or one in a PCI slot ? True make sure have most up to date drivers for this device, check settings for this device. As said try to fill in system specs from your profile page here.

I don't know if I have an integrated sound card, under devices and in dxdiag all I can see is my headphones, not info regarding sound card.

By the way, weird thing but it got fixed by updating the drivers and then reverting back to the old drivers again. Thanks for suggesting checking my drivers.

YW, Usually know you will have sound and mic input jacks( or a combination of black, green, orange jack colors) on the back of the PC that integrates into the motherboard, then you have an integrated sound device. Otherwise be a card in a slot horizontally. Headphones are not a sound card, so without a sound device the headphones would not work.

System specs you filled in are not enough or correct for me to find your motherboard, i see it is a MSI but can not find it online through that model you listed. Believe if drivers are not in there or generic, may not tell you a brand of sound device in DXDIAG. Might just say HD Audio.
