So I gave my mom windows 8

Yes, if you use hybrid boot it is faster.

It isn't a big deal. Many don't use hybrid boot - even if you do - so what , a few secs off there is not important.

Not compalining about it - but it really hardly matters.

@Cokie - there are definitely things left out of install.wim that make it smaller.

The extra phone ui cobbled onto win8 takes up space. Unless they take other stuff out - it will look very big, and take longer to install.

Windows 8 does benefit more from a SSD because of hybrid boot.
And hybrid boot is lost on many an SSD owner, myself included, as we shut off hibernate on our machines to save disk space. On an 80GB or 120GB drive, I don't want to dedicate ~8GB to a hibernate file. I'd rather lose a few seconds at boot and squeeze a game or more apps into that space instead.

When I installed the RTM it was actually shockingly fast. I installed in to a normal HDD, and it was done in like 10 minutes.

After 5 minutes she was like: I can't view my photos! Internet explorer doesn't work right. I found her flailing around senselessly in the metro interface. I uninstalled all of the metro apps(and made a youtube guide below, and there hasn't been a single issue since.
