Slow web when downloading large files after clean install

Did a clean install of Win 8.1 Pro x64 on a desktop i7-2660K machine a week ago. Since then, there's been a problem that didn't exist before the clean install, namely web page loading is very slow while downloading large files, a few hundred mb to a few gb. Pause the downloads and pages load normally. Before the install, the page file was set to system managed size. System drive is fast Plextor SSD and RAM is 16gb. I've now tried 32gb max and still slowness. Not sure where to turn on this. This is a relatively fast cable system (Charter), with line to the computer through an Linksys E1200 router (for wireless laptop). Any ideas? One thing I hadn't done yet is reinstall the router on the desktop, but I just did that and it makes no difference. Is that necessary? Thanks,

I'm interested in any responses to this as well, because in my opinion Microsoft screwed it up.

I'm not sure when they changed it, but I noticed they changed this quite a while back. The change they made seems to give full bandwidth to the first thing you start downloading, but as you've discovered it's a nightmare like this because it means you can't do anything internet related until the download has finished. In the case of a large download, that's frustratingly limiting.

How it was before, Windows seemed to balance the load so you could have something downloading in the background, but still carry on with other things on the internet. How it is now, the second thing you try to access on the internet will usually result in a timed out error and if doesn't it's so incredibly slow that it's unusable.

It's not just with file downloads either, if you've got a heavy loading webpage, you can't just leave it loading that page and go view another webpage, because the first webpage sucks all the bandwidth to itself . Also, if you click a link on a heavy loading webpage, it won't do anything due to the webpage sucking all the bandwidth. So you either have to wait for the whole page to load first, or you have to open the link in a new tab, then close the heavy loading webpage tab.

I don't know what they were thinking to be honest because it's pretty bad as it is now. Maybe on a super-fast Microsoft LAN they don't notice how bad it is, but in the real world the changes they made are terrible.

After setting the page file max to 32 gb, I rebooted and it was the same. But after that I installed about nine Windows updates, again rebooting. Then I ran a test, really aimed at checking if it was a browser issue, but it turned out all browsers, including my main one, Opera 12.17, are ran fine with two downloads going. Makes me wonder if one or more of those MS updates was aimed at this. My downloads are done via Internet Download Manager, so to cover that I've just excluded both its and Opera's executables from Comdo's a-v and firewall, and MBAM's hatchet. Maybe a place to look at for your web page as well?

There are ways to turn off QOS on Windows 8. You can check to see if your provider is throttling your connection by running Shaper Probe. ShaperProbe After you run it in a command window, post the results.

With using Comodo & MBam, along with Opera, yes that could be the issue. There are just too many factors, without you doing a lot more diagnosis and testing to pin point the problem.

someone tell me i am crazy??!! read this one more time.

so you are saying when you download a large file your internet goes slow? wow that doesn't sound logical at all right? haha

man, when you use your bandwidth, your web pages and anything else will go slow!

so what is the problem?

run this it's free (NON-flash) based speed tester of internet
SpeedOf.Me, HTML5 Speed Test | Non Flash/Java Broadband Speed Test

now the most funny part about this is are you going to try to surf webpages while this is testing your full speed? and then will you complain that it's going slow when you try to surf the web while it's running a full speed test with your internet??

am i crazy?

Do a large download and run Shaperprobe at the same time. Then paste the results. If there is a large differential in speeds, then I would be looking at maybe something along the lines of QOS at play. Either in Windows or on the Gateway/Router.

highstream, i am just using logic man.. that is what you said.. it's all there in black in white..

look are you still having this issue? did you run the speedtest link i posted? did the results seem normal? to what you paid for internet?

also clear me up then man? i would like to help you..

is the problem you can't use the internet when downloading large files??

*edit- if you want to see the real "logic" i talk about, send me the link to download this apparently "large" file and i will download and try to surf the same exact pages you try to go to that are "slow"..

so send me the link to download whatever file.. and then tell me web pages that are "slow" for you and i will download the file and go to those web pages.. that's called logic.

also tell me the web browser i should be using that you use.. that's called testing actually..

Running two large downloads via IDM, downloading at 1.5 mb/s and 2.5 mb/s. Light delay loading new pages, nothing close to what led to this thread.

Your speeds look correct for your profile with the ISP if you are using WIFI, they are always going to report a little lower. If you connect via WiFi, they should show higher. Every wifi chipset handles the connection differently from another.

I get the same speed with the Intel Dual-Band Wireless-ac 7260 WiFi adapter I have installed in mine and my son's laptops. It is the same if the units are connected via Ethernet or Wifi to either the U-Verse gateway or my AP that I use on the Cisco router I have.

Except I'm not using WiFi, or don't mean to be. The Charter cable line comes into their box, but to provide WiFi for my laptop I'm running the line to my desktop computer through a Linksys router. When I started this thread, I hadn't reinstalled the Linksys software yet - it doesn't seem necessary - and I'm not recalling what the Windows Network connection said. Maybe "Ethernet 2" or something like that. Since then, I have installed it, and now Network in Windows shows the router as an ethernet connection. So I assume, or at least am hoping, that's what I've got, not wireless.

Your setup could be the issue. What is the model of the Linksys Router? If it is capable of running Tomato or one of the other Open router firmware projects, you could try that.

What happens if you connect directly to the Charter Gateway?

Linksys E1200. While dealing with some of the problems that led to the clean reinstall, I got the request to pull the router out and see if there was any difference. There never was. Just ran Shaper with two files downloading. Compare with post 10, which was run well into the evening.

You have to connect to the Charter Gateway and then go to the Gateway IP that is listed as "Default Route". Then you will look for the tab that shows Downstream and Upstream power levels and any errors. What is the mfg & model of the Charter Gateway?

Your setup could be the issue. What is the model of the Linksys Router? If it is capable of running Tomato or one of the other Open router firmware projects, you could try that.

What happens if you connect directly to the Charter Gateway?

Hi,

I think the setup is most definitely the issue. Start troubleshooting by using other devices with that setup. can your friends laptop be used on the setup? can you use your phone/ipad/tablet.. do you have an older computer to try?
