Show of hands, who hasn't and isn't buying the $40 upgrade

From Windows XP, which is "past its security expiration date" and also only supported for another year and a bit, it felt like a no-brainer for me to grab it at the cheap price as long as Windows 8 ran on my hardware. Which it seems to do (with perhaps occasional flakiness).

Having seen the "normal" price, especially here in the UK (£25->£190!) I still reckon it's worth considering buying it today (while it's cheap) for people with later versions of Windows, and taking a bit of a gamble on there being a Service Pack to tweak some of the issues before actually installing it (although I'd be surprised to see a Start Menu anytime soon).

Like it or not, (Not), I have to believe that when the price goes to $200 for w8 the sale outside of oem pc's for w8 will plummet.

It is not gaining wide acceptance at $40, can only imagine how it will fare at $200

I've bought 3 copies so far: 2 for me, 1 for my sister and I'll probably buy another 1 tonight before the deal expires.

Anyone complaining about Windows 8 needs to look at the bigger picture: it's not designed to be a desktop operating system. You can use it as such if you're happy to compromise or work around the functionality but remember that there was no point in Microsoft releasing another desktop OS when touch and gesture is likely to go more mainstream in the next 18 months as OEMs get on board. Windows 7 isn't ready for that, so Windows 8 it had to be.

Yes, they could've implemented it a little better and, as it is, it's a little half-baked in terms of the Modern UI but you have to walk before you can run and Microsoft are looking at it as a marathon not a sprint.

albeit I have to say it just does not seem as bad has a great deal of people on this site make it out to be.

It's brainwashing by these article sites that spew out the "I Hate Windows 8" articles, and the some people here read it and praise it then spread it along to Windows 8 forums such as this.

"I Hate Windows 8" is the new cool hip thing bandwagon lately. :/

There's too much polarization going on. Either the product is for you or it ain't. Simple enough, but we all have to get into philosophical arguments about it. It's a tool! If it doesn't address your needs then use something else. (Which is what I chose to do). No big deal.

Use what works for you, that is fine and dandy with me. Just a lot of these "sheep" follow the herd and the hate bandwagon just because it seems cool and hip.

I took the upgrade on this laptop (even though I had a retail disc) just to see if the gaming performance was better. Yes that's sad, yes it did work, but does Windows 8 impress me? No.

I honestly think this feeling is because so many people really don't like it.

It used to be that some people would just rag on MS because it was MS. And everything anybody else did was better because it wasn't MS.

I've always used MS products and in most cases I don't think they are bad. I support their servers and have been certified on quite a number of their products over the years. But even so, I don't like every version of everything. XP I liked, Vista I didn't, 7 I loved, 8 I don't really care for.

Here in UK its was something like £24; I did. Win 7 by comparison is still retailing in some stores at £79. and, yes, I like win 8

I first started on Win 3.1.1, went up to 95, then 98 (which was quite good at the time), through ME (garbage) to XP (best to date) to vista (crap) then win 7 and now Win 8. For ease of use, after setting everything as I wanted, I go for Win 8.

Yeah, I just wanted to see how many of us, who said we weren't actually happy with 8, would elect to not buy it..even if it was cheap enough.

I contemplated numerous times of buying it and at least having it sit on the shelf....but I decided that it would be most likely used on a new computer build, which would be from parts anyway, and would not qualify for the upgrade...so I would be buying the System Builder/OEM style license anyway.

I don't understand, I have multiple instances of programs running right now, how is the Start Screen an impediment to that?

No, you don't have multiple instances of apps open and visible at the same time, as well as other open programs. You cannot have say four apps open in your right hand screen and a program open on your left hand screen at the same time. You can't subsequently open another program to momentarily show on your right hand screen, and be able to toggle between any and all of those. You can't even do that easily with just one screen, with apps in the background as you quickly toggle between programs. It can't be done.

All you can do is have one (or two at the most) apps open and nothing else. Once you want to use the desktop, the apps disappear completely, even if you had another screen vacant where those apps could remain visible and active. The entire interface is designed around a mobile phone screen, everything that you do is intended to be done one thing at a time and to occupy the full screen, no matter how big.

Microsoft has said that Windows 8 apps/start menu will be the interface for all devices, no matter how big or small. They want the user experience to be the same, even if devices are used for totally different purposes. Screw the desktop users, you will use a mobile phone interface, so get used to it.

True, you can't run multiple APPS at the same time on the FULL SCREEN. APPS are full screen applications designed for Tablets, but can run fine on a PC. They can run at the same time, just not on the screen so you can see them.

Now, Windows Applications are a DIFFERENT ANIMAL. These are the older (and still new) applications we all know and love. They still run as they did before, in the Desktop, as before. No problem there.

So, if you don't like the APPS, don't run them. Remove them from the Start Screen and just keep shortcuts to your Windows Applications on the Start Screen. And put the Widnows Applicatons in the Windows Desktop Taskbar and Screen to easily start them when in the Desktop (as before).

Really, it's not that bad and works great!

Just curious, how many of you have used Windows 8, have tried the various free preview options and have decided to simply NOT purchase the product by the end of the day tomorrow when the $40 upgrade price offer goes away.

I will be the first one to say, I haven't purchased a copy and am not planning to.
I bought the upgrade for "the future" whatever that will bring--actually I bought 2--one using a 32-bit machine and one using a 64-bit machine--getting two product keys in the process. I also I bought the available "DVD" at the same time as doing the upgrades. Turns out that each DVD purchase includes two discs (same as retail set)--one 32-bit and one 64-bit (cost of one upgrade plus one disc set is $55.98 = $39.99 + $14.99). Anyway, I didn't really need to make two DVD purchases (thought originally, given the way things were worded, that one DVD would come with each purchase--matched to the "bitness" of the machine used to purchase the upgrade). As indicated, not true. Sounds like I made a good investment given the coming price increase(s). Get em while they're hot. Yehaaaaa! Actually, I am running a Technet version of 32-bit Win8 right now; haven't used either product key yet.

Your poll left out at least one pertinent response--the one that applies to me. :D

"Yes, for sure, but Windows 8 isn't for me."

I'm like you, but not so good. Like to play with new systems, etc.

As an "amigo" most of you know what I'm doing, so no need to address that. :)

Do you think it wise not to have a copy for home use since you need to learn and know it for work? But then again I assume you have a laptop you could bring home? Or perhaps remote desktop? Just curious. Of course I know it's none of my business if you don't want to or feel the need to divulge that info.

Alright. :thumb:

The most important thing is to get it going with all drivers available and no programs issues... VMware will install nicely if needed or Hyper-V will do its job well also.

As you said a while ago you don't really need Workstation 9 for the full compatibility in Win8 because WS version 8 got a nice patch pretty recently (you already use that) 8.0.5 which works well on Win7 and Win8.

We didn't had to rush for the reduced Win8 price offer anyway, we get it when we need it and that is not like the rush during shopping season... OMG Win8 offers!!!! ....please :sleepy: be practical: to buy it, just because it's cheap, and not use it would be a real waste.

So in the end everyone had its own choice and decisions, offer expired, we had enough time, but we're all happy.

You took a good decision.
