Services - Restore Default Services in Windows 8

How to Restore Default Services in Windows 8 and 8.1

information   Information
This tutorial provides you with registry downloads that will completely restore any of the default services and their settings you want in Windows 8, Windows 8.1,and Windows 8.1 Update. This can be handy if a service was deleted by mistake, is missing, or had it's properties set improperly.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

Note   Note
Services are located in the registry location below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

warning   Warning
If you did not delete a default service, then you might consider doing a full scan of your system at boot with a program like Windows Defender Offline to help make sure that your system is clean.

Here's How:

1. Click/tap on the link under the Display Name column in the table below of the service that you would like to restore to download it's .reg file.

2. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

3. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.
Tip   Tip
If the .reg file does not merge and nothing happens, then you will need to check in Default Programs to make sure the .reg file extension has its Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again.

4. If prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK.

5. Repeat all of the above steps if you would like to restore another service.

6. When finished, restart the computer to apply.

7. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .reg file(s) if you like.

Note   Note
To download all available default services below in one ZIP folder, click on the Download button below and save the ZIP file to your desktop. Open the ZIP file, and extract (drag and drop) the REG file for the file extension you want to restore to your desktop. Now you could just pick up at step 3 above.

Although the last mod said to use start and automatic, the majority seem to say stop and manual.

*So, 1-stop(not running) and 2-manual it is.

I realize the work I put you all through and am very appreciative of your patience and time. My next system recovery thanks you also.:thumb:

You can use either setting.

I would recommend to use Start and Automatic to be safe. :)

This is the reason I should not have cross posted. You will read my other message - I really am sorry for confusing things. It was not intentional. Stop and manual did work and kicked Macrium to start which it did. I guess I will never know the default but the image worked and I'll be checking the restore points. Your patience is appreciated and will not be taken advantage of.

Hi, I don't know if this is the correct thread as I am having problem with win 8.1 not starting correctly,
I have "Classic Start" installed so it normally starts in desktop mode but it now starts in desktop with NO icons on the screen and I get a message that "Windows couldn't connect to the Group Policy Client Service" and during my investigation I was led to this site because I discovered that Group Policy is triggered by " AllUserinstallAgent" which is missing but is not listed in your Service names list above.
Can you please advise if this is an omission or am I on the wrong track?
p.s. when my p[c starts the "Quick start" icons on the taskbar do not work either
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
Cheers
Alan

Hi Alan

Brink can certainly solve your problem and let's hope he sees this.

Meanwhile have you tried the obvious tools available to you.
If your pc was running well at a certain time, you can do a system restore to regain its performance and if that does not work you could recover an image providing you created one.
Meanwhile I will be researching the issue and report back if I find something.
Good luck.
Peter

Hello Alan, and welcome to Eight Forums.

The Windows All-User Install Agent (AllUserinstallAgent) service only exists in Windows 8, and not in Windows 8.1 or Windows 8.1 Update.

A system restore as Peter posted would be a good idea to hopefully sort this for you.

It would be better to start a new thread for your "Quick Launch" issue though to keep this one on topic. I'll keep an eye out for it, and be happy to see what I can do to help. :)

Hi Brink
Eventually system restore opened, (a bloody long time after I selected) and I was able to invoke a restore which fixed my problems (the restore took about half an hour).
Just in case I need it where do I find the right click command menu in win8 when a third party start menu is installed?

Cheers

Default Services Conflicts with other sites

I'm attempting to determine the actual service start-up default settings for a few specific services in Windows 8.1 Core, Pro & 8.1 Updated. The confusion results from conflicts between a few popular sites: A. Eightforums.com (here) B. Black Viper's Windows 8.1 Default Services, C. batcmd.com windows 8 services, & D. winhelponline.com The 4 services in conflict are: 1. Background Intelligent Transfer Service, 2. Device Association Service, 3. Program Compatibility Assistant Service, & 4. Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service The default start-up settings listed for the services on these sites are: 1A. Automatic (Delayed Start) 1B. Automatic (Delayed Start) on 8.1 List, Manual inside Windows 8 & 7, 1C. Win8 = Automatic (Delayed Start), Win8.1 Pro = Manual, all other Win8.1 = Automatic 1D. Automatic (Delayed Start) 2A. Automatic (Trigger Start) 2B. Manual (Trigger Start) 2C. Manual 2D. Automatic (Trigger Start) 3A. Automatic 3B. Manual 3C. Manual 3D. Manual 4A. Automatic (Delayed Start) 4B. Manual 4C. Manual 4D. Automatic (Delayed Start) I was wondering if there was any possible way to clear up what is happening with these service start-up conflicts. P.S.
