I entered Control Panel->Administrative Tools to examine the settings of a service. While doing this, the alphabetical order of the list mysteriously became randomised. I cannot find a way to restore the alphabetical order.

Hello hake, :)

Double check to make sure the Administrative Tools folder is set to have "Details" for the layout folder view.

Next, you can click/tap on the Name column to set the "Sort by" view how you want. You would want the small arrow in the Name column pointing upward.

Thank you Brink. That is most helpful. I have a hunch that the issue arose because the Acer laptop had a problem with the laptop's built-in pointing device. This had become very contaminated after a long period of use and was behaving very erratically. I cleaned it with the aid of a fine toothbrush and methylated spirits and at length the pointing device behaviour became more consistent. It was during this time that the service list ordering issue became apparent. Over the following 24 hours of use, the behaviour streadily improved. I wonder if it is possible that the driver software connected to the pointing device had to readjust to the changes caused by cleaning the pointing device.

You're most welcome.

It may have caused it to become easier to click by mistake, and will just take a bit of time for you to get the feel of it again.

Does this solution also apply to Windows 8.1. The affected system is back in the hands of its owner and I haven't yet had a chance to try it out.

It does. The setting is the same in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.
