How to Add or Remove a Cascading "Select" Context Menu in Windows 8

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove a cascading Select context menu for all users in Windows 8 that expands open with Select all, Select none, and Invert selection available.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to add or remove the Select context menu, but all users will be able to use the Select context menu.

Note   Note
Normally, you could also click/tap on the Home tab on the ribbon in File Explorer to use Select all, Select none, and Invert selection.
  • Select all - Select all items in view.
  • Select none - Clear all your selections.
  • Invert selection - Reverse the current selection.

Tip   Tip
By default, you could also select multiple files and folders using keyboard shortcuts.

To select random multiple files or folders:
Press and hold the Ctrl key while clicking/taping on a file or folder to select them, then release the Ctrl key when finished.

To Select everything inbetween two selected files or folders including the selected files and folders:
Select a file or folder, press and hold the Shift key, click/tap on another file or folder to select them and everything inbetween them, then release the Shift key.


EXAMPLE: Cascading "Select" Context Menu
NOTE: The left screenshot is when you right click on an empty area on the desktop, in a folder, or in a library. The right screenshot is when you right click on a file, folder, drive, or library.

Here's How:

1. To Add Cascading "Select" to Context Menu
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 3 below.​

2. To Remove Cascading "Select" from Context Menu
NOTE: This is the default setting.
A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 3 below.​
Remove_Select_from_Context_Menu.reg

3. Save the .reg file to the Desktop.

4. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

5. Click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK when prompted.

6. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.
