Hi forum,

I'm trying to play Star Trek Elite Force in Windows 8 but I'm still waiting a reply on that. Anyway as the title suggests I'm trying to run STEF (Star Trek Elite Force) in WinXP which I installed on VirtualBox but I keep getting a error:
The virtual machine window is optimized to work in 32 bit color mode but the virtual display is currently set to 16 bit.

Please open the display properties dialog of the guest OS and select 32 bit color mode, if it is available, for the best possible performance of the virtual video subsystem." So I changed it in the control panel then booted the game still the same error so I opened the properties for the game and checked run at 265 bit color booted it and got an error which stated that it could not load the OpenGL subsystem. :'(

Please help and any suggestions are appreciated. :)

(Sorry for the long post and if it's in the wrong section)

Success!! Running Star Trek Elite Force on Windows 8.. easy!! Youll slap yourself for not thinking of it...

Long story short....

Make a directory on your Harddisk called EliteForce

copy cd contents of the CD onto the new EliteForce folder

create shortcuts of STVOY and STVOYHM from the setup folder onto your desktop or wherever

and double click! Done!

No compatibility or run as admin required.. that simple...

One warning, dont adjust the brightness in the game if you even touch it and try to bring it back, youll have to reset it to default and retune all of your other video settings... DONT TOUCH BRIGHTNESS its plenty bright..

ENJOY!! Im anxious to start playing again....

Brooklyn Baby!!

when i touched the brightness button everything got darker like the contrast disappeared, even if i set it back.

You cant see it at all? Do you have opengl installed? check out this post re: intel hd 4000/2500 graphics card win 7/8

Windows* 7/8 Driver (32 & 64 bit) - Version 3071 - Intel® HD GFX 4000/2500

If that doesnt help then the instructions say to delete these files

Additionally, you may find that you need to remove the configuration file so the game starts with the default settings. There are configuration files for both Single Player and Holomatch. They are efconfig.cfg and hmconfig.cfg.

They are in the \setup\basef folder

This will set all configs to default settings..

I'll give it a run, I'll get back to you tomorrow. I can see 3 pixels from the top on the left side of the screen and the background. I can select but I have no idea what I'm doing.

Elite force brightness fix, confirmed

Confirmed, if you delete or rename those two files econfig.cfg and hmconfig.cfg you will regain brightness control.

You can make it so bright as to just about wash out the screen..

Im still working on getting the smooth details back after renaming those files..

I know this is an old thread, but I'll post the solution I found to this problem in case it might help someone.

ihaznoidea, I was having the same black screen problem with Elite Force that you are/were when I ran it on Win 8.1/64.
Installing this patch solved the issue for me. No need for any compatibility modes, and no issues with changing the brightness. :)
