Restart Time

W8.1small.png
there is several reasons for the differences.
1) hardware
-SSD disk will make a lot of difference. If you get two in RAID0 then startup may be faster. mSSD is slower than SSD. 125GB is slower than 256GB but 512GB is not faster than 256GB. Fastest are Samsung Pro series. I would not buy SSD only to get faster boot time.
2) bloatware
3) services running
4) registry tweaks (turning on serialization will shorten startup time a lot)
5) disabling visual effects will help too

I know about disabling the visual effects and removing bloatware and preventing unnecessary startup programs. Just not about the registry (turning on serialization), or RAID0.

I'm going to tweak a few settings to see how fast I can get. My system has the SSD/HDD setup. Although it's not setup for raid.

I know about disabling the visual effects and removing bloatware and preventing unnecessary startup programs. Just not about the registry (turning on serialization), or RAID0.

I mentioned RAID0 as an example of hardware setup that can provide extra speed. I do not have RAID0 setup. Single SSD plus tweaking makes 22s restart as in the picture I posted above.

What I did is not difficult:
originally bought laptop with 1TB HDD 7200RPM
added single SSD as OS system disk - Samsung 840 Pro 256GB (Samsung provides currently fastest SSD for SATA 6GB/s setup). OS cloned from HDD do SSD.
tweaked registry
trimmed services and startup programs
turned on fast boot in BIOS (this may or may not be available in your system BIOS)
I did not touch visual effects because GPU handles them pretty well.
Fixed all the errors in Event Log with exception of Store-Licensing but I guess as long as I do not sign up for ms live this error will stay in Event Log

I do not really care about startup/restart times but I do a lot of photo editing and often system resources are exhausted fast so lean system is important.

RAID0 would make sense if you do video editing or anything that requires fast sequential read/write of large files (and as a "side effect" you get short boot time). For average user with small to medium random read/write access requirement RAID0 is unnecessary overkill.

So before you decide to buy SSD for your daughter, first tweak her laptop, see it this is enough. Maybe you she will not need anything beyond this.

There is a neat little script that times your restart time,
have you tried it?

My own restart time is abysmal, because I do a lot of maintenance when my PC is starting up.

It's pretty much immaterial, because I hit the BIG SWITCH. to start up my system, then I walk into my kitchen to see about my first cup of coffee, and sometime during that process, I hear my STARTUP music, followed a few seconds later by a friendly female voice telling me "You've got mail" and then I know it's time to go to my PC and read my morning mail. It's all very neat and efficient.

At 70 yrs old I don't have a lot of time to waste. So my PC, now 8 years old, has also been tweaked and tuned for maximum performance. It SCREAMS!!!! This old AMD, X2, 5200+ CPU, really walks the dog. (so to speak)
I wish I could buy another dozen, just like it! It outperforms, just about every PC on the market today, without a lot of tweaking.

Have a very nice 2014, OK?

Seems like most users here are using this script and based on results they are more or less happy.

The third restart time of -43040 seconds (measured at about 180 seconds), could be a clock wrapping around but the script looks correct.

End time = 0 second as clock wraps around from 43040 to 0.

I have mine down to about 12 seconds to boot up from cold, and about 15 from reboot.

Can't post at the moment because work. But still, it is shocking to see numbers this high after it's been out this long!

I have not customized the start up services yet. My system is on the cheap and slow end $380, so I didn't think optimization was worth it. Perhaps, after I have learned more Python, I will work on Windows 8.1 start up services. Though the 105 seconds, is embarrassing to my daughter's MacAir boot time.

I switched from AMD SATA driver to Windows default SATA, defrag HDD and so on, but still.
