Report: Full upgrades to Windows 8 only from Windows 7

Microsoft tells partners essentially what it's already told customers who tried the Windows 8 previews

Computerworld - Microsoft will support full upgrades to Windows 8 only from the three-year old Windows 7, according to a report Thursday.

Yesterday, ZDNet blogger Mary Jo Foley, citing unnamed sources, said that Microsoft has informed select partners of the upgrade paths to Windows 8.

Microsoft has not yet set a release date for Windows 8, but most analysts expect it to go on sale this fall, most likely in October.

So far I will stick to DUAL Boot and not to upgrade the OS.

I think it's saying you won't be able to upgrade from the RP to RTM. I guess it'll be back to this.

I believe this is purely speculation. "citing unnamed sources" Nothing in concrete from M$. I don't trust these "hollywood" tech writers.

But, if does turn out to be true, which I highly doubt, M$ would really be off there rockers!

Why do you say that MS would be off their rockers? Maybe so, but no worse than before.

The reported upgrade paths are similar to those for going from an older OS to Win7, although the Win8 upgrades are a little more convenient.

XP, Vista, and Win7 were all stated as qualifying the use of a Win8 upgrade license. Only Win7 would allow an upgrade-in-place, and that only for specific versions. For XP and Vista owners, a clean (custom) install would preserve files and (in some cases) settings.

The Win7 upgrade required XP or Vista. Only Vista allowed an upgrade-in-place. A custom installation wiped everything (or moved it to windows.old). Windows 2000 users (not common) were not supported. 95, 98, and ME users, ditto.

It should be for a lot of users got conflict while upgrading Win7 to Win8 OS, MS got complain/feedback's of worried about their Win7 upgraded. So, it became a news cause they can't handle anyone the users and tell them that they need to upgrade it just to stop them from complaint.

Hi guys
Didn't we go through the same sort of "Horse-----" when people wanted to upgrade their XP systems to W7. Didn't take long for people to find a way.

Same again this time I suspect especially when aging XP systems are finally retired. Remember the install disks of some of those XP applications could be "Donkeys years" old with lost serial numbers etc etc so a lot won't or can't do a complete new install if they want to keep existing applications.



Don't create problems where none exist. !!!

I also suspect that if the "Classic" desktop is made any more inacessible than it is currently then who will bother to upgrade anyway. -- Even seasoned Geeks on these Forums have had some problems with W8's navigation system. How do you think the "Bog standard" user after several years of using vvarious flavours of Windows will react.

Those using a computer for the FIRST time probably won't find it too bad especially if they are coming from the "Smart Phone" generation so they'd be used to those little square icons on the device (I believe as it's known on the W8 Forum as the Kiddies Menu).
