Solved Removing Windows 10 Recommended Update from 8.1 Updates

When I boot up my Windows 8.1 system, on the screen preceeding the login screen, I get a message that there is an update available and I need to go to the settings option. Going there, I find that the only update available is KB3035583, which is the option to upgrade to Windows 10.

As I have attempted this upgrade for several weeks which failed in each of the different methods I have discovered, I decided to remain with 8.1 and not spend more unproductive time trying this upgrade.

I have uninstalled this update (KB3035583), to remove the script icon from the taskbar, however I now keep getting the update message during bootup, where I now do not know if there are any new updates for 8.1, or if it is only the Windows 10 update that is giving this message.

I would like to know who to remove this update from the Recommended updates that I now get during the update check, in order to no longer receive the update message. Although I had this on the Windows 10 forum, I was told I needed to use this 8 forum for this problem. Thanks,

Removing KB3035583 from Windows 8.1 Recommended Updates

Your option 1 link was to remove the upgrade script in the taskbar which I had already done. Your option 2 link provided a download for a reg file to reset the registry to not upgrade the OS. I downloaded it and ran it and then restarted, but the updates available message still appeared in the bootup screens.

I did find now, that there were other Important and Recommended updates for 8.1 available, so I updated all of them, except for KB3035583. After completion and restarting, the updates available message did not display as I asked.

HOWEVER, when checking for updates again, under the settings script, all of the Recommended and Important updates were gone, EXCEPT for the one Recommended update KB3035583. Hopefully the updates available message will no longer display on bootup, if only KB3035583 is the one available. However, since it still displays under Recommended updates, I know sometime in the future, I will forget and include it in the updates installed. Because of this, I would like to remove KB3035583 completely from displaying when I check for updates.

You can right click on it and select hide.

Right clicking worked on Windows 7, however nothing happens when I right click on the updates on Windows 8.1. That is the first thing that I tried.

Saw by the path shown on your image, that you went through the Control Panel to the updates. I was going from the Start Menu and selecting PC Settings and then Update and Recovery. Only the Control Panel display provides the right click and hide option which I have now done. Now when I go through the Start Menu and PC Settings, it is now hid there also. Not sure why they don't offer a hide option from the PC Settings Menu..... Another Microsoft winner! Anyway, all solved and thanks,

Yes, that will disable all upgrade to Windows 10 updates.

Sleep pattern still bad. I still need to do my questions. I watched Pope Francis on TV the past 2 days and watched some today as well. I'll also be watching for the next 2 days when he's in Philly. Will probably get my questions In order after his Philly visit. I do have one question not related to your tutorial though about product support for Windows 8.1. The information I have is that Microsoft will support 8.1 through 1/10/23. Is that correct? Thanks, again, Shawn for your help.

Windows 8.1 lifecycle is indeed January 10th 2023 for extended support.
