I got a key for Media pack, but I find I really don't need it.

Is there a way to remove it without reinstalling my system? thanks.

You can disable it/turn it off in "turn Windows Features On or Off". You are correct though, that likely doesn't uninstall it and recover the hard drive space used. I've used that guide to go from Ultimate back to Home Premium in windows 7. It will be interesting to see if it works for Windows 8. I'd backup your Data just in case it all goes south though.

I guess I must apologize. I didn't fully read the instructions I linked to, and assumed that Windows would somehow recognize the change and remove Media pack by itself.

It worked perfectly. I followed the instructions to remove mentions of WMC from the keys, and I was able to do an in-place upgrade and keep EVERYTHING, including desktop apps and their configurations!

That's, nice to know, that it works with Windows 8 too. The hard part would be knowing what to edit the entries to? So you just removed the "with Media Center" part leaving "Windows 8 Pro"?

yep. and the reinstall kept EVERYTHING. the only tyhing I had to do was to launch all of my metro apps once to start up their live tiles.
