Solved remove homegroup from windows 8.1

Hello entropy,
Nope, that doesn't work in Windows 8.1 as you found out already.
If you don't use homegroup, then you could disable the two services below, and restart the PC to no longer have HomeGroup in your navigation pane afterwards.

HomeGroup reappears after re-booting
Thanks Shawn, for your great tutorial series on customizing the Navigation pane in Windows 8 and Windows 8.1.
I'm working in the latter, and followed the above instructions, and after first re-boot the Homegroup disappeared from the Navigation pane. Several re-boots later after removing Network and changing the order of Libraries and My PC in the Navigation pane, the Homegroup was back !
A check in services.msc revealed the HomeGroup Provider service had turned itself on again.

Any solutions to making it permanent for the Homegroup Navigation pane icon?
All other tutorials work a treat for my Windows 8.1.

Hello SwahiliWizz, and welcome to Eight Forums.
Did you stop and disable the HomeGroup Listener and HomeGroup Provider services?
If so, then you might see if setting the "Recovery" properties boxed in red below to "Take No Action" instead may help.

Thanks so much for your reply and support. Have made changes to properties (amazing where you can right-click for context menus and properties - I did not know that).

Hi all,
Just a quick note to say thank you. Killing the homegroup listener service was the key to getting the Win 8 box I'm working on to connect to a Windows XP machine that has the shared files we needed to get to. Thanks again!

I am having the same problem that started this thread - trying to remove Homegroup service, and then the icon in File Explorer. Although the services were stopped followed by restart OK, the icon is still there.
Trying to "Leave the Homegroup" got me a message that Windows could not allow me to do that.
I also tried the Win 7 registry method of getting rid of that icon, but regedit wouldn't allow me to change the value Homegroup - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane - Windows 7 Help Forums
I think that I set the permissions correctly on both folders but I still got "Access denied"

Now I can use our inherited Workgroup without any trouble again.
As you probably guessed, I am new to 8.1 . I started with MS-DOS, then windows v 1, 3 ,4, 5, win95, 98, 98SE, XP Pro, Win 7 Pro and ended up with 8.1 when my wife needed a new computer. I still use all the others but of necessity have to learn how to massage 8.1 (Pleasantly surprised at how well the preinstall worked, but I mainly use 7 these days and don't need to change my own XP/Win7 PC.)

Great news Tony. 
Yeah, Windows 8.1 takes a bit to get used to, but once you do, it's not bad at all. Wait until you give Windows 10 a play with. I think it's even better that Windows 8.1 so far.

I might try Win 10 on a spare partition when I get my reserve PC back from Acer - their new RAM went bust after a month so when they fix it I could use that without causing problems on my workaday PC.

PS I can manage most things - in the 1980s I ran a live "direct to CD" system at Television Centre studio one where the PC I was using (20MB HDD no less) crashed and the backup was from the 5 1/4" floppy I had packed in my toolbox
