Release Preview - Nothing but problem after problem after problem.

I had no problems with Customer Preview, everything worked, but, I must say that this Release Preview is another story all together. My PC hardware configuration is unchanged since installing Windows 7 when it came on to the market.

1. Doing a clean install did not install a clean installation of Windows 8. It took three attempts. Previous wallpaper, user login avatars, etc. kept showing up in the new supposedly clean install, even when installing with a local account.

2. At shut down I am constantly getting a winlog.exe error stating that I need to insert a disk in to various empty drives. This stops the computer from shutting down. The error message appears 18 times and has to be clicked away every time it appears. The OS shuts down but my computer hardware keeps running [fans, disks, etc.] I fear I may have to get rid of Windows 8 RP before it ruins my entire PC.

3. After the OS has shut down the computer itself will not switch the power of. The computer light showing disk activity is constantly on, even though the OS has been shut down.

I'm going to have to give up on this OS. This release candidate is not working at all well on my setup. Highly peculiar, especially as I had no issues with the Customer Preview and nothing has been changed in my PC hardware setup.

Hello Rich,

I know you said clean install, but just to check, did you delete the old Windows 8 CP drive/partition so it will be "Unallocated Space", then reinstalled Windows 8 RP?

Did you use a local user account or a Microsoft account? If Microsoft account, then that would be why you got your user picture back since it synced with your Windows Live ID and used the same one.

I completely reformatted the partition before install to ensure that it would be a clean install. Before doing that I completely removed Acronis, which I use for start up recovery, from Cust. Preview via add/ uninstall programmes and deleted the windows.old file in Cust. Preview.

The screen prompts mentioned here http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/2299-clean-install-windows-8-a.html are the ones I get during install. Nothing odd there. I choose Custom Install.

The .iso file was on a bootable DVD which was then inserted in to the DVD drive. I've tried installing using both MS Live and a local account and I keep getting the winlog.exe error at shutdown. The winlog.exe dialogue in the screenshot box reappears 18 times before the OS will shut down. The monitor switches off automatically as normal, yet the PC will not power down. The fans, HDD's, etc. all keep running. I am beginning to suspect that this problem is being caused by allowing hidden folders to be seen. It always appears after changing that setting in Folder Options. The only tweaks I have made to the system are in Folder Options in the Control Panel. The changes I make are:

1. Allow hidden files & folders to be seen
2. Allow known file extensions to be seen
3. Allow hidden drives on the computer to be seen
4. Use check boxes to select items.

Winlog.exe keeps demanding that I insert disks in to all of my card reader drives at shutdown. The card reader drives all work fine in RP and none of them are broken. Here's a screenshot to illustrate this problem:

Screenshot (2).jpg

These dialogue boxes have to be cancelled 18 times before the OS will start to shut sown.

My Metro tiles also seem to be a lot smaller when compared to those in Cust. Preview. Whether this is meant to be I'm not sure. They install looking like this and have not been tweaked in any way:

Screenshot (1).png

I have my doubts as to this being the normal size for Metro tiles on a clean install.

The account screen wallpaper which I installed in CP is also being installed during a clean install of RP, this is also the case for the desktop wallpaper. Rather odd behaviour for a clean install.

Tweetdeck is also unusable in Window 8 RP. It refuses point blank to connect with the server during logging in. The necessary .Net files are installed fot Tweetdeck. It is permitted internet access in the firewall settings and the system time is also correct. Tweetdeck worked fine in CP.

Without the OS being able to shut down my computer properly, even after 3 clean installs of Window 8 RP, I fear I may have to give up on testing it altogether.

In order to sort this problem I have had to disconnect my card reader from the motherboard. Fantastic Microsoft, that'll really help me with transferring my photo's to my computer in your hopelessly and utterly, utterly doomed Metro UI on a desktop. How can it be that my card reader worked flawlessly in Customer Preview but in Review Whatever it's called it messes up the entire operating system at shutdown? Great work, keep going in that direction MS. At this point I'm rapidly turning into a Mac and not a PC.

Interesting. Have you already installed the card reader's drivers (possibly using Compatibility Mode if needed) to see if that may help any?

No, only because the card reader, which supports 5 different types of cards, has worked with every version of Windows since Vista up to Windows 8 CP. The generic Microsoft drivers have always worked fine. Very odd state of affairs. Still, with the card reader uncoupled from the entire system, Windows 8 now shuts down and the PC powers down without a problem. I'll see how things go, after 3 installs I can't be bothered doing another at this point in time. My previous posts were more about me letting off steam, after 3 re-installs I was beginning to get mighty pissed with Windows 8, as I'm sure you can imagine.

I'll hook it up at some later date to see how RP reacts.

One thing, about the default size of Metro tiles, has Microsoft changed the default size of them? As I mentioned in a previous post, mine are now much smaller in RP compared to CP. There's a screenshot above.

HP, I'm sorry to hear that you had so many problems. Somewhere in the realms of the web I read that the easiest thing to do was install the Preview edition over the old one, and I did it without any trouble. Looking at the problems others have had with a clean install, I think I made the right choice.

Definitely, although I must say it's all running fine now, thankfully.

I must admit though it runs very well and slick when its going. I'm sure MS will fix this up shortly, I had a similar problem with the CP when I first installed it, about a week later it was fine, Rome wasnt built in a day.

Do I sound like a Fanboy or what.

That sounds weird....I've never heard of issues like that due to a card reader....but yeah, hopefully that gets fixed before RTM. That is unacceptable.

Speaking of such, I remember once installing Windows 7 on a laptop and we were trying to get an SD card to be read and I saw that the driver was never installed. I thought it was odd that Windows didn't have a driver to install for that to get it to work. So I had to find HP's driver for that and it was working. Strange stuff I say.

Hi there
I had a TERRIBLE time but eventually got it OK
Something had set my internal "C" disk so the system thought it was a USB stick which caused no end of problems after install.

Totally wiped the Disc -- actually changed the disk to SSD -- went fine -- less than 12 mins from start install to Bootup.

Cheers
