RecImg wont recognise my hard drive as a fixed disk

I expect I'm missing something foolish.

running WIN 8 PRO 64-bit

After I had Win 8 set up with my basic programs, I created a custom-image using the CMD and the recimg.exe included with Win 8. [My laptop came with a C: OS partition and a D: partition].

I have since done two things. I created reduced the size of my C: partition and created an E: partition.

When I run the recimg.exe in the CMD(as admin) window, it starts to run and then I get the error message that the drive I instructed it to write to is not a "fixed drive". I've tried both the c: and D: drives.

What am I missing? Thanks for your help

Thanks for your respnse. Hm, drives c, d, & e are all formatted as NTFS. I've tried running RegImg with each of the drives as the target and get the same error
Disk Management doesn't specify "active", but I can read / write to each drive with other programs

when i run recimg.exe i get this ! and nothing starts to run , i would think i need to add this command ,
/createimage <directory> ,but i don't have a large enough partition to try ,and i have to admit i never used recimg.exe yet ,so im just guessing , i think maybe its trying to run the recovery image because you already created the backup ,not sure

Microsoft Windows [Version 6.2.9200]
(c) 2012 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.

C:\Windows\system32>recimg.exe
Configures the recovery image Windows uses to refresh your PC.

RECIMG.EXE <command> <arguments>

The recimg.exe command line tool lets you configure a custom recovery image
for Windows to use when you refresh your PC. When you create a custom
recovery image, it will contain the desktop apps you've installed, and the
Windows system files in their current state. Recovery images do not contain
your documents, personal settings, user profiles, or apps from Windows Store,
because that information is preserved at the time you refresh your PC.

When you create a custom recovery image, recimg will store it in the
specified directory, and set it as the active recovery image. If a custom
recovery image is set as the active recovery image, Windows will use it when
you refresh your PC. You can use the /setcurrent and /deregister options to
select which recovery image Windows will use. All recovery images have the
filename CustomRefresh.wim. If no CustomRefresh.wim file is found in the
active recovery image directory, Windows will fall back to the default image
(or to installation media) when you refresh your PC.

Note that you cannot reset your PC using a custom recovery image. Custom
recovery images can only be used to refresh your PC.

The following commands can be specified:

/createimage <directory>
Captures a new custom recovery image in the location specified by
<directory>, and sets it as the active recovery image.

/setcurrent <directory>
Sets the active recovery image to the CustomRefresh.wim file in the
location specified by <directory>. Windows will use this image when you
refresh your PC, even if a recovery image provided by your PC's
manufacturer is present.

/deregister
Deregisters the current custom recovery image. If a recovery image
provided by your PC's manufacturer is present, Windows will use that
image when you refresh your PC. Otherwise, Windows will use your
installation media when you refresh your PC.

/showcurrent
Displays the path to the directory in which the current active recovery
image is stored.

caperjack; thanks for your responses. I don’t know why I got the error messages I did before [perhaps a typo I couldn’t ‘see’], but I tried again last night. Successfully J
You are correct you do need the /createimage command.

Here is my entry into the CMD
C:\WINDOW\SYSTEM32: recimg.exe /createimage C:\custom-image\01-05-13-109-30-pm
Where 01-05-13-109-30-pm is the new folder I created for the new image.

I was going to post a copy of my cmd window, but I don't know how yet

Always great to see success ,good job .
to copy/past things like cmd prompts ,just ,right click on the cmd windows and choose select all ,then use short cut keys , ctrl+c ,to copy it, then you just right click in the forum post and hit paste .

Hi,
Is it alright to use C:\ partition for creating and keeping the custom recovery image ?? If yes, then during refresh, will it not get wiped off as Windows 8 installs itself again.

Regards,

Rakesh
