Rearrange minimized windows of the same program in taskbar

Is this possible? I have 3 open Chrome windows that are minimized in the taskbar. I would like them to remain in the order that I originally opened them, but sometimes Windows 8 decides to switch their order. It's extremely frustrating and totally breaks up the flow of my work. Can I rearrange them back?

You can rearrange them manually by dragging them left or right.
That sounds like the obvious answer, but it's not a correct one. You can drag different programs left or right, but not multiple instances of the same program.

Who said anything about "always combine?" They're set to "never combine" on my PC, and no, dragging doesn't help rearrange them.

Ah I think I found it, that happens when toolbar is locked, unlock it and give it a try. I always keep it unlocked so I can make it higher if too many tabs are open, it's also set to Autohide.

I'm super happy that you've been able to do it since Windows 7. I had been able to do it since Windows XP or whenever M$ implemented taskbar window dragging. But I am not able to do it in the current Windows installation, which is the whole reason I started this thread.

I'm happy you are happy that I'm happy, I just told you my experience with it. I have been out of XP for too long to remember if it was possible with it.

I'm just pointing out that this problem is not as obvous as you're suggesting and that you are dealing with an advanced Windows user who wouldn't go through the trouble of starting a forum thread if this was as easy as dragging something left and right.

Sorry if I offended you but I have no idea about your experience, I just respond to a question, have no idea about the person that posted it.

Still looking for a solution to this, if anyone has found one. The problem also persists in Windows 10.

Just to further clarify the problem (I hope), look at this image:

Cantdrag.jpg

There are multiple pages open in Seamonkey (my browser) and when you point to the Seamonkey icon in the Taskbar, you see a render of each page. Whether you have Always combine or Never combine, those images cannot be dragged at all.

The other icons on the left side of the Taskbar can be dragged, just not multiple instances of the same object. You can't drag them in Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 either, I just checked.

If you use 7+Taskbar Tweaker as I mentioned above and check the "drag to reorder" option, you can re-arrange the windows. See the quick video I made on this.

OP here. I have been using the solution suggested by JamesWise above (the 7+ Taskbar Tweaker utility) for 2 years, and it works fine. It also works in Windows 10.

It's maddening that you have a third party app for something so obvious, but it works pretty well.

How did you make it work? It doesn't remember order, after relaunch of browser!

Isn't it. Honestly if I installed 3rd party utility every time I need something... But Microsoft is too busy installing bloatware, spyware on out computers and making money... Why would they fix bugs, or include most basic functionality, if it doesn't make money?! You nothing to them but $... It is ridiculous honestly, you can't even do basic crap like this... It is apparent to everyone with a brain, even ravens, or trained monkeys, but apparently to not garbagesoft... What a disgusting company... So annoying...
