OK so i leave my pc on overnight as i have task set to run like virus scan defrag and various windows task. I never had this issue with win 8 but know i get this random freze issue with win 8.1. I left it on overnight like i always do i woke up moved the mouse the screen woke up but things were frozen, I tried CTRL ALT DEL and nothing. can someone help me narrow down the problem please, Only thing that i have done that is new and PNY dont think its a issue is flash the video bios to fix the secure boot issue, could a setting off in the bios be causing this should i reset to default? Thanks all and have a awesome day.

here is the administration errors out of the event viewer saved as Errors.evtx and zipped for you all hope it helps.

here is another tool i used for you the sf diagnostic tool to collect logs but it did not find any mini dump logs so not sure if win 8.1 is configured to do them or not. but all the other logs are there thanks for help when you all get a chance.

ran DISM and it did repair something not sure if it fixed this issue till i wake up next day LOL

Well, it appears that you've been having a conversation here with yourself. :(
Sorry that I haven't been able to reply sooner (lot's of problems here).
But I must say that it seems that you've probably fixed it yourself - good work!

Thats ok usasma i figured you were busy so i ran the DISM and it seams to have fixed whatever it was :) not sure what all the issues were but it has not frozen up since that day. any issues i should fix? that you see in those logs.

I ran DISM too in Windows 8.1 Pro, it fixed some errors but stull my lapptop hangs/freezes frequently. I tried in safe mode and there were no hanging/freeze.

DISm .. you people means ' windows assessment and deployment kit for windows 8.1".

i am in middle of setup, but before pressing NEXt i want to confirm first that is it realy of 5.6GB?
and what did it do with BOSD's?

That link got blotted out.

My Windows 8 on this system used to do that, after beating my head over it for months, I finally DISABLED all Automatic Windows Store updates.

Because when I checked the Event log from right before the Freeze, it had just started BITS and tried to download updates for several Store Apps.

So it's in the STORE app, when the app comes up, drag out the Charms bar, and click the GEAR, go into APP UPDATES and SHUT OFF automatic updates for apps.

The moment I did this, the next day my PC was still running.

I have Store App automatic update already turned off. Could it be Windows Update too, that causes this freeze?

FYI - this is TonyB's topic. If you'd like assistance/advice - please start your own topic.

TonyB - I'd suspect that there might be an issue with the.NET stuff (but I'm far from certain about it) - but since DISM probably fixed it, I'd leave well enough alone for now.

OK thanks usasma i will do that and just keep a eye out for any .net errors if any kreep there ugly head.

All I know is, I had the exact same Freezing issue - It would happen some time between 12 midnight and 3 am every night.

I already had Automatic Updates for Desktop shut off, I never ever allow those. It was the Automatic Updates for STORE apps that was causing this problem though. That can only be shut off through the Store App and it's "Settings" panel. I was offering this as a possible solution for whoever was having the problem.

Once I shut that off, and my Automatic Updates were already off, the freezing stopped.

I think the OP should check his System and Application event logs from the last time it froze, and see if BITS had started, and if it was trying to update Store apps, that way they can see if it is the same issue as my system was having. That's all I can offer for this kind of freeze issue, in my case a very specific scenario caused it- I doubt if those same issues will be reproduced on a totally unrelated machine, but you never know.

Anyway, if someone has a problem that is akin to being almost exactly the same issue, I don't see why a "Me Too" is unwarranted. If an original post got buried, go boink it though.

Bushido - please be patient. There are only a few of us who troubleshoot BSOD's. I'm also updating my website for Win8.1 I will get to your post in the order that it was posted (I work my way up from the oldest to the newest as my time allows).

usasma, I´m sorry. I didn´t know how much resources are available here. I´ll be waiting for your answer.
