Power Options Menu - Add or Remove Sleep or Hibernate in Windows 8

How to Add or Remove "Sleep" or "Hibernate" from Power Menu in Windows 8 and 8.1​

   Information

This will show you how to add or remove the Sleep or Hibernate option from all Power menus for all users in Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows 8.1, and Windows RT 8.1.

You must be logged in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

   Warning

You will not be able to add Sleep or Hibernate to the Power options menu if Windows 8 is running from a VHD file in a virtual machine.

EXAMPLE: Power options menus














Here's How:


1. Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click/tap on the Power Options icon.


2. In the left pane of Power Options, click/tap on the Choose what the power buttons do link. (see screenshot below)

3. Click/tap on the Change settings that are currently unavailable link at the top. (see screenshot below)

WARNING: If you completely disable UAC notification settings, then you might not have the Change settings that are currently unavailable link available, and the "Shutdown settings" would remain greyed out with no way of changing them until UAC is enabled to at least the default setting.

4. If prompted by UAC, then click/tap on Yes.

5. Under Shutdown settings, check or uncheck Sleep or Hibernate to add or remove them from the Power menu in the Settings (Windows+I) screen, then click on Save changes. (see screenshot below)

NOTE: If the Shutdown settings are not listed, then you will need to close the System Settings window, enable hibernate, then start back at step 1 again.

6. When finished, you can close the Power Options window.

Hello Brink, I always amazed with your reply in lightening speed!!

What I did which I do not normally do is removing pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys before upgrading(in-place) to W8.1. I restored the hiberfil.sys but no effect on the problem.

That shouldn't have affected this.

You might see if doing a repair install may help.

The repair install I tried failed. There was no message explaining why. Check disk, System File Checker found no problem. I disabled all service but for those for Windows, and disabled all startup application softwares, but still the repair install failed.

The OS was originally W7. I do not think the problem was on the W7 but cannot say this for sure. The W7 was upgraded to W8 with everything including apps etc. inherited. W8 was then upgraded to W8.1 likewise, which is the present situation. Upgrading W8 to W8.1 was time consuming and pains taking process: The update installation could be done only for 5 or so of them at a time when the total updates listed were over 200.

Any other suggestion will be very much appreciated to save my W8.1?

Pleased to report that the problem is resolved by installing the graphic card drivers.

The driver for the video card was "Microsoft basic driver" which must have been since W7. The problem might have something to do with my monitor being 4K or 3840 x 2160.
