Here's How:

1. Open the Control Panel (icons view), and click/tap on the Power Options icon.

2. In the left pane of Power Options, click/tap on the Choose what the power buttons do link. (see screenshot below)

3. Click/tap on the Change settings that are currently unavailable link at the top. (see screenshot below)

WARNING: If you completely disable UAC notification settings, then you might not have the Change settings that are currently unavailable link available, and the "Shutdown settings" would remain greyed out with no way of changing them until UAC is enabled to at least the default setting.

4. If prompted by UAC, then click/tap on Yes.

5. Under Shutdown settings, check or uncheck Sleep or Hibernate to add or remove them from the Power menu in the Settings (Windows+I) screen, then click on Save changes. (see screenshot below)

NOTE: If the Shutdown settings are not listed, then you will need to close the System Settings window, enable hibernate, then start back at step 1 again.

6. When finished, you can close the Power Options window.

That's it,
Shawn

Thank you Aaron. Warning added. I hope that will be addressed by the time of the RTM release.

MadeOke,

It looks like either your system does not support hibernation, or you do not have hibernation (S3) enabled in the "Power Management" section of your BIOS setttings.

Could you update your system specs to show what brand and model of motherboard or computer you have? This way we will be able to look up to see what it says about it, and what settings you may be able to set for it.

In the mean time, you could use the tutorial below to help see what sleep states are available for your system.

MadeOke,

Do you have Windows 8 installed on the laptop itself dual booting with Windows 7, or in a virtual machine running in Windows 7?

What sleep states were reported as available while in Windows 8?

MadeOke,

See if running a sfc /scannow command may help.

In addition, check at the registry (regedit) location below to see if you have a HibernateEnabled DWORD value set to 1 in the right pane of the Power key.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power

Yep, hibernate will not be available in a VM or VHD. Thank you for posting back. :)

This thread saved me a lot of time. I couldn't figure out how to get to the greyed out 'require a password from sleep' item. I NEVER would have thought to ENABLE UAC in order to get it to work. MS is weird.
Thanks!

Hey Dusty,

Nope. Removing "Sleep" from the menu doesn't affect the computer from being able to go to sleep when set to do so. :)

I have no "Sleep" option problem and followed the instructions but after the step 3 I got the following which is different from that shown in the instructions. What could be wrong with my W8.1?
