The installed Key is a KMS Volume License Key - and almost certainly means that the install is counterfeit, unless you are a member of the issuing organisation.

Not sure if using this tool will help me - I bought a secondhand Samsung laptop (NP365E5C-S03US) for my daughter on eBay - the laptop (which is in lovely condition) has the Windows 8 sticker on the bottom. However, the seller had upgraded to Windows 8.1 more than a year ago (which hoses the recovery partition), then reset the computer to clean it out and give it to me. Now it thinks that it has an expired Win 8.1 Enterprise evaluation version, shows the watermark on the lower right, and it can't activate. The seller has been trying to help me but he's baffled because he never had an Enterprise evaluation version, he just installed the standard Windows 8.1 version that the Microsoft store offers you about every other day.

I have a key retriever and have written down not only the Windows 8.1 key that fails to activate, but also the OEM key from the BIOS. I assume that's the Windows 8 key. I've requested a recovery disk for the laptop from Samsung. I went through this before with my own Samsung laptop and was able to revert to Windows 8 that way. Do I have what I need, or do I need to run the diagnostic tool at the top of this thread? Thanks! Windows 8.1 + Samsung = MESS!

Upgrading from Windows 8 to 8.1 does NOT hose the recovery partition!

The only thing you can do now is contact the manufacturer and request a set of Recovery disks for that machine.

Alternatively, you can get the Windows edition that Samsung installed using ShowKeyPlus and download the Win8.1 version from MS using Media Creator (unless it's CoreConnected (aka with Bing) - in which case Noel's suggestion is the only way to go)

Hi!

I am trying to activate my Windows 8.1 Pro which I purchased from the Microsoft website online about a year ago. I neglected to ever activate it until now because I would like to upgrade to Windows 10 but for whatever reason, I cannot activate it. I have already called Microsoft support several times and they've been no help.

I already went through the command prompt process that they list online but when I type in the command to activate it, I get the same exact error message.

Please help!

The key you have installed is the problem - it's a volume licence key - see here https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj612867.aspx

Change the key to the one you received from MS.

You will have to phone them and explain the situation in order that they resend you your key.

If you have a backup or have upgraded from your previous key, you could try using ShowKeyPlus... see my sig.

The installed key has been blocked by MS... please contact the seller and get a new key.

Should they require further evidence, other than the diagnostic report, direct them at the event log errors and let them run the following command:

slui 0x2a 0xC004F009

Phone activation may work but is not necessary if a key has not been used before.
