Lately my PC has been showing "low on memory" messages, and now it's starting to run very slow. I know those things can be indications of a virus or other such problem, but I just did a full system scan (using Norton) and it didn't find anything wrong. What else might I try?

I did that, and it didn't help. However, I notice that it's happening mainly when I have several Word and/or Adobe Acrobat files open at the same time. Maybe all those files are using up the memory. I hope it's nothing more serious than that.

Could be. You can check in Task Manager > Performance tab to see how much of your system resources are being used while you have all this open to see if it's pegged out or not.

From the indications given by Task Manager and Resource Monitor, it appears that whenever I have Adobe Acrobat Reader open, the amount of memory it uses will gradually increase even if I'm not adding or modifying any files. Could it be that Adobe is creating more and more backup files all the time that it's open? Even then, it shouldn't use up all of my memory. I have 6 gigabytes of internal memory and a 1 terabyte hard drive.

As a test, you might manually increase the size of the page file to see if you still get a "low on memory" message afterwards. You may need to keep increasing the size until you stop getting the message.
