How to Require a Password after Display is Off for Specified Time in Windows 8.1​

   Information

This tutorial will show you how to require a password after the display is off for a specified time and before the PC goes to sleep or hibernate for your account on a Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 tablet or Surface.

This does not apply to desktops and laptops.

OPTION ONE

Set Time to Require Password after Display is Off in PC settings

1. Open PC settings, and click/tap on Accounts on the left side. (see screenshot below)​

2. Click/tap on Sign-in options on the left side of Accounts. On the right side under Password policy, select how long after the display(s) is off for to require a password when turning the display(s) back on. (see screenshots below)​

​

3. When finished, you could close PC settings if you like.​

OPTION TWO

Set Time to Require Password after Display is Off with a REG File

​

1. Do step 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 8 below for how long you want after the display(s) is off for to require a password when turning the display(s) back on.​

2. To "Always require a password" after the Display is Off​

​

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 9 below.​

3. To Require Password after Display is Off for "1 minute"​

​

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 9 below.​

4. To Require Password after Display is Off for "2 minutes"​

​

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 9 below.​

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 9 below.​

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 9 below.​

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 9 below.​

A) Click/tap on the Download button below to download the file below, and go to step 9 below.​

9. Save the .reg file to your desktop.​

​

10. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.​

​

11. If prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, OK.​

​

12. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .reg file if you like.​

I'm not aware of a way to disable this other than to set your display to never turn off.

I'm trying to save battery on my laptop and the screen is set to time out after 1 minute. It's a great way to save battery, but having to enter my password each time ruins it.

The above method hasn't worked

Is there any way around? Or third party application that can do it?

If you dont know how- then there's little hope.

How about to dim to very absolute minimum after a time?

Wow- I've some how made this happen. Here's what I did.

I applied your registry entry (10 minute delay) from above. As it didn't work, I manually deleted the entry "DelayLockInterval" and rebooted.

All of a sudden- my screen shuts off but there is no password prompt! After sleep/hibernate, it still asks me for a password.

So good news for me

Thanks for that. It was already asking for my password on startup and after it went to sleep. So no complaints at all!

However- just in the last few days it has stopped sleeping automatically (normally sleeps after 2 minutes when on battery). I'm on the right power profile (Battery) and in both places (under advanced power options, and at the basic settings of the power profile) it says it will sleep after 2 minutes.

If I push the sleep button on my laptop- it sleeps.

What could be preventing my laptop from sleeping?

Did you install or change anything right before this started?

If you like, you could do a system restore using a restore point dated before it stopped automatically sleeping to undo whatever caused it.

I'm afraid that this setting is not available in Windows 7.

As a workaround, you could turn on screen saver password protection, select the "Blank" screen saver, and set the wait time to be the same amount of minutes you have set to turn off the display.

Yes, I know that, it is just that I have different timeouts for battery and AC operation (it is a laptop), so that solution does not fit 100%.
