OS C: drive filling up

I'm not sure if I posted this question in the proper forum so I apologize for my error.

I've noticed that when I install programs onto my partitioned drive "E", many files and programs transfer onto my C: drive. Last night it indicated that C: is reaching full capacity. I would like to know what I can do to remove some of these files without affecting my programs?
What are my best options?

Thank you.

Can you give some examples of files and programs which have transferred from E: to C: when you have installed a program on E:?
