Optional Update KB3000850

Got this optional update (KB3000850) today and no information yet.
It was 723.9 MB and took forever to install.

I will wait for the information to be posted before I update my Laptop.

UPDATE: MS just released the information. Its a Nov 2014 rollup so that is why it was so big.

I think most if not all of the issues are with the disk crunching that is going on after the install. Windows will do some housekeeping and this is what we are seeing. I think Microsoft runs these updates on a bunch of test machines but "forgets" sometimes clients have underpowered PC's and Laptops.

I totally agree with all these statements. I think after major updates it takes the PC some time to sort everything out after the required restart.

Well, 3 hours in all to install and run a clean-up. Disk space despite disk clean-up showing only 250mb to remove has settled at some 600mb down (the OS space used) from just before the update was started. Disk clean in the end recovered some 2gb back. A defrag from a command prompt showed some 4% fragmentation, so a lot has changed.

I wonder if Avast antivirus is the common cause for those who are having problems? https://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=160717.0

Just to satisfy my curiosity I uninstalled avast through add remove programs rebooted then ran avast clear to get rid of the remnants rebooted again. Windows Defender enabled itself. Ran the update again from the installer I had previously downloaded rather then through Windows Update.

Exactly same scenario.....the update will not complete the install and just backs itself out after rebooting itself twice so it's definitely not avast causing the problem in my case.

I've now definitely given up on this update.

Interesting, that's quite a list. Thanks :)

(my first shutdown took longer than normal, and my first "boot" from shut down took around 17 seconds compared to the usual 13 or so. Percentage wise, that's a big hit, hope it recovers with use)

Found this error in event viewer, any ideas?

It appears it is looking for the update on F: drive. Don't know if it is a virtual drive the update process creates or problem with actual drive assignment.

On the laptop the stand alone update is being run from the Desktop on C Drive (where the os resides), and gets the same error message looking for that file! It is just the same line in Event Viewer, with the address of the desktop (rather than the F on the desktop.

F on the desktop is not a virtual drive.

My boot up is about the same but shutdown is slower than usual. I used to have a shutdown of about 3 seconds on two 8.1 machines, now they both are about 6 seconds. Still not so bad but I hope future updates don't make this even slower. They (MS) should always strive to make the operating system speed the same or faster when making any changes.

I'm not able to notice any considerable changes in boot time, restart time or shutdown time. I didn't bother to record the time with stopwatch though :)

No problems with me, updated 5 computers and one server without any issues. Surface Pro 1, Asus vivotab note 8, lenovo edge 15, hp pavilion x360 and dell server pe2950 running windows server 2012 r2.

I forgot my acer r7 572 updated without problems....

I had same issues and more. IE11 would not work properly and Windows Explorer would freeze - lots of generally strange behaviours. All back to normal. When I get a chance I'll see what's in the update in detail and decide if I need it.

VooDoo

I noticed that it also increased my restart time and cold boot times dramatically as well. Normally I can cold boot to an active responsive desktop in under 4 seconds and restart in under 10 seconds. After installing this update, cold boot time increased to over 2 minutes and restarts to over 3.5 minutes...and once it finally got to desktop my system was still unresponsive for another few minutes while my HDD cranked away at 100%.

I noticed that right after my manufacturers logo, it would sit at a blank (but actively lit) screen while the HDD cranked away for minutes before showing me the "Welcome" screen.

I had all that too.....at some point during my endless reboots etc to try and sort it!

I use AVAST. I wonder..............

I didn't need to bother with a stopwatch because shutdown time is about double the amount of time that is was before, that was very easy to notice right off the bat. As long as they don't keep adding to this time in future updates then it's not a big deal.

Well that was fun, not. An hour from start to finish on an i7, 6GB RAM and a 40GBps BB.
I wouldn't have minded a bit of notice, pretty please?
Not impressed.

Don't know how I'm going to convince Lappy owners on slow/restricted connections to go for this.

Dang, I use one every time I shutdown or start up. :p

Used to look up on the wall clock during my Win 95 , XP days, so that I could plan taking a short nap during boot up :) Nowadays you don't get time for that too with Win 8/8.1 :(

Since I installed KB3000850 and KB3011780 my laptop will not shutdown or reboot. It just hangs on the teal shutdown screen and I have to power-off. Also noticed that CyberGhost 5 will not connect to any countries servers.
Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you
