Optional Update KB3000850

Got this optional update (KB3000850) today and no information yet.
It was 723.9 MB and took forever to install.

I will wait for the information to be posted before I update my Laptop.

UPDATE: MS just released the information. Its a Nov 2014 rollup so that is why it was so big.

I noticed that it also increased my restart time and cold boot times dramatically as well. Normally I can cold boot to an active responsive desktop in under 4 seconds and restart in under 10 seconds. After installing this update, cold boot time increased to over 2 minutes and restarts to over 3.5 minutes...and once it finally got to desktop my system was still unresponsive for another few minutes while my HDD cranked away at 100%.

I noticed that right after my manufacturers logo, it would sit at a blank (but actively lit) screen while the HDD cranked away for minutes before showing me the "Welcome" screen.

Well, this morning switched on my Desktop and after Windows screen but before log in screen, it said installing Windows Updates, and I waited about 20 minutes before reached Windows desktop. Everything was sloooooooooooow, could do nothing. Tried system restore, it said successful, but was stuck on Windows screen. Booted to my rescue disk, and reverted to a very recent backup clone of my disk. So back to normal, but will not be installing this update.

My laptop booted as normal, it was not successful in installing the update :D

Forgot to say that before. I had this also on my laptop, at first it said the install was not succesful. The second time it worked (unfortunately :P )

Took about 1 hour total on each pc - not bad. Strange thing with HitmamPro tho - it started sending all Windows info to Scan Cloud after updates...just turned off "Upload to Scan Cloud" as there were a couple thousand items. Evidently the updates changed something in the makeup of Windows files.....?
 
Mine took less time -- only about 15 minutes. That's the good news.

The bad news is that, upon restart, Win8.1 would not reboot to the desktop. Had to do three cycles of Automatic Repair before PC finally rebooted into Win8.1 desktop.

Was about to give up and restore from my latest MR backup, when it finally worked.

All-in-all, took about an hour, but most of that was in running the Automatic Repairs.

Had this problem as well. Took 3 cycles of pulling the power plug out and cold booting to get back to the desktop. Pressing shutdown button put it to standby which didn't do much and holding for 5 seconds to shutdown didn't help either...only way to get myself back to my desktop was cutting the power directly. :(
 
I've commented elswhere but as this is the main thread...

An hour to download and install. A long initial restart after which I left it and then did another restart to finalise everything. Now running disk clean and that has been going for an hour and a quarter. That is ridiculous. 3.5gb added to the OS size following this update and only 0.25gb found by disk cleanup.

First job when it finishes will be to make a disk image... I'm not doing this again.


(a friend once said about Windows updates... why bother, they just break things and then you need to get someone else to try and sort it out. Lol, while I don't endorse that comment I can see why she said it)

This is just one weird update, honestly.

I decided to have Windows Update check for updates again and reinstalled this update and afterwards my system is still running like normal. No increased boot/restart times, no system performance cripples....weird.

I had this question as well. I've installed all the recommended updates already so my feeling is this rollup is pointless duplication - it is just installing the same things again. Is this correct or am I missing something?

That's what I said last time I was having problems with an optional update that was a rollup - MS Forums promptly informed this was ill-advised since future updates may depend on it. I agree with you - if it's optional why should it have any bearing on future updates, but I gave in and quit hiding the optional updates............lol!
 
I think most if not all of the issues are with the disk crunching that is going on after the install. On my system with a 8 core FX 8350 it is running at a constant 25% CPU usage which would make a large number of dual core systems slow. Often after updates Windows will do some housekeeping and this is what we are seeing. In the time it took some of you to go back and fix by restore and downloading 750mb of updates if left alone this update would have finished. I recently updated an 800Mhz PIII system on XP and it took all night and half the next morning to sort out dot net updates. I think Microsoft runs these updates on a bunch of test machines but "forgets" sometimes clients have underpowered PC's and Laptops.

Edit, doing upgrade to a VM with a spinner hard drive. uptime 24 mins after update boot HD @ 100% CPU @ 25%. At 30 mins after booting CPU usage spiked up to 90% but was sitting at 75% average. If you have an SSD it will be quicker. This VM has 4 cores from the CPU running at 4GH on an FX 8350.
Best idea with this update is to let it run overnight or if you are going out for a while. Do not restart during the process as it seems to continue until it has finished. My other machine with 8.1 on the hardware has been sitting at stopping services for 15 mins with regular disk activity so it is grinding away.

I agree that this is a strange update.

I installed last night. The download (723 MB +/-) took about 25 min. and the actual install took another 15 min or so including the required restart. At first I was a bit concerned because after the restart my WiFi was disabled but came back on it's own after a minute or so and before I could start any troubleshooting and has not been a problem since. My PC ran very sluggish for an hour or so but by the end of the evening it was performing normally and the restart time does not seem to have changed.

I always install all MS updates including optional ones and I have never had any issues but obviously there was more to this one. The most interesting thing though is what appeared after the install in my reliability monitor. The first item is the actual optional update and as for the rest, I can't explain it but my system is performing as it did before the update although I can't see any changes.
