Optional Update KB3000850

Got this optional update (KB3000850) today and no information yet.
It was 723.9 MB and took forever to install.

I will wait for the information to be posted before I update my Laptop.

UPDATE: MS just released the information. Its a Nov 2014 rollup so that is why it was so big.

Microsoft technicians would really take the time to ring you out of the blue and advise you they've found problems with your computer that they're more than happy to fix for you.

Really!!!! Wow!! I cant wait for them to try again, and here was me threatening to unsurgically remove their kneecaps - silly me!!!!

Well maybe Windows is working so well for most people that their techies don't really have anything else to do with their time except search for those poor individuals who are having problems that they don't even know about :D.

Only ever received 1 call out here in Greece, but I'd love to get more, just to see how long I could string them along by asking stupid questions and generally misunderstanding (which I am very good at doing :D on occasion.)

I can't get it to even begin to download: looks like KB3000850 is a complete fuster cluck. My next PC will be an android.

Have you tried the stand alone update ?

2--- Download Update for Windows 8.1 for x64-based Systems (KB3000850) from Official Microsoft Download Center

Hey David, you posted at just the right time for me :thumb:. Tried downloading via Windows Update but got stuck at 4% so came on here to see what others had experienced and saw your post. The standalone update is well into the download, and I've realised I can use the same files on both laptops, thus saving a second download.

Fingers crossed that installation will be as smooth :D.

I hope it goes well.

I used to have problems downloading the online JAVA.
When I started using the offline .exe files I had no problems.

To those of you who responded to my post: THANK YOU for your help. In the end, KB3000850 did load, and install, and so far has caused me no problems. My guess is that MS watches these posts closely, and responds by fixing these types of issues as they are able to, but that they do not disclose this to us. If my theory is correct, then the computing community owes you gratitude.

The download hang at 4% is normal. I posted this a few weeks ago. It has done this on all my systems.

I am doing my Laptop now. The download goes to 4% then pauses and Windows Modules Installer Worker kicks in high gear and shows lots of Disk activity. After a while it calms down and the download resumes. Running on my Laptop with a SSD it took 10mins to resume the download.Download pauses at 90% and Service Host and System kick in high gear with Disk activity. After another 3 min the install starts. Another 7 min and ready to reboot.

My modifications to Windows Start menu caused the error

After running into the same error 80070002 ("failed") as others have after a long process of waiting for the application of KB3000850 to finish, I eventually discovered THIS POST in an MS Answers forum which provided the key solution.

I use Start8 (although that's not really relevant) and through it had done my standard Start Menu modifications that I do for Win7, moving the assorted dozens of items to my own invented higher-level folders (i.e. "categories"). This reduces the Start Menu "clutter" and I feel more comfortable.

Well, following the 80070002 error, according to the diagnostic instructions found above-mentioned post I then examined CBS.LOG (in C:\Windows\Logs\CBS) with Notepad and did a "find" for ", error". And sure enough, just as the poster had said, the fact that I had moved several Win8 folders from their original Start Menu locations into my own invented folders was the problem. Each of these corresponded to an ", error" entry in CBS.LOG.

In particular, all I had to do to eliminate the 80070002 error and allow the KB3000850 optional update to complete was to put back (i.e. recreate, by moving from my own folder location back to where they were apparently critically expected to be by KB3000850) the following:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessibility
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\Tablet PC
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Accessories\System Tools

Furthermore, because of an additional move to a sub-folder that I had done which the above poster had not done (and which was revealed by another ", error" item in CBS.LOG), I also needed to recreate one more folder:

C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\System Tools

In other words, whatever "missing folders" in the Windows 8 \Start Menu\Programs are identified by ", error" items in CBS.LOG, you need to restore them to their original locations.

And once I completed this restoration process, well now KB3000850 now finally did complete normally and prompt me for a reboot, and it was done!

...Ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, no problems reported. Ran sfc /scannow...

Setting up a brand new HP laptop for a friend. Problems installing this update again (third computer for me to have this problem). Tried:
1. stopping WU service, renaming SoftwareDistribution, restart WU service, run WU - failed.
2. download full package from MS, manually installed the 2 smaller updates (included on download page) first then the big one - failed.
3. did sfc /scannow, reboot, ran downloaded package manually - failed.
4. did Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, reboot, did sfc /scannow, reboot, ran WU and let it go - worked!

This update has caused me problems too. After about an hour, it still hadn't completed and was causing my system to run VERY slowly. I started Googling the update, which led me here where I discovered I might have bigger problems.

I keep seeing KB3000850 described as an optional update received in Nov 2014. I've only got this update today (4th March 2015!) and Windows Update is telling me it's an important (not optional) update. What's going on?

Me too! And I've had WU on Auto all that time.

I have been having issues with this kb3000850 update. I got this update a couple of weeks ago marked as important. I have windows update on auto so this update was automatically downloaded to my computer. I did not have any issues with the update being downloaded but only after. Ever since then on start up I have to restart my computer to be able to login with my account details. Also my computer suddenly slows down a lot after a few minutes of activity on it to the point of the mouse lagging when I try to move it. For some reason now when I move my mouse during a video from any site like youtube it stutters the sound.

Hi - I am new to this forum and have been reading about KB3000850. It has come up as an important update (I have a refurbished computer and had to investigate by elimination which update was causing the fail), and it downloads and installs fine, but refuses to configure on restart (gets to 8%), reports failure and undoes changes. Is it as important as it says it is, as I am fed up with trying to install it. Everything else works fine and all configure properly. Can anyone help?

I'm also having problems with this update....running into it as I'm also trying to update to Windows 10, but can't.

I've done many things:

1) Windows Update Diagnostic several times which has found errors it can and cannot fix
2) sfc /scannow - found errors it can't fix
3) ran dism /restorehealth - doesn't fix all errors
4) ran diskcheck during startup, no errors found

I've downloaded the update, it installs, and during restart has to finish, but can't so the updates are undone. This update has only popped up recently. The only ", error" in CBS log is this

2015-08-05 22:52:23, Error CBS Session: 30461961_674738757 failed to perform store corruption detect and repair operation. [HRESULT = 0x80240021 - WU_E_TIME_OUT]

I've got lots of logs after running these diagnostics...tried to upload the logs, but couldn't get the upload tool to work somehow.... I'm a pretty good novice, but I've been running around in circles and can't seem to make progress. Any help would be very appreciated.

I could not upgrade on my laptop via update so went direct to ms and downloaded media tool and it went in perfectly. BUT, on my pc, I used the download update in Update perfectly.
