OneDrive - Remove from Navigation Pane in Windows 8.1

How to Add or Remove "OneDrive" from Navigation Pane of File Explorer in Windows 8.1

information   Information
SkyDrive is now called OneDrive instead.

OneDrive is Now Available Worldwide: Free Cloud Storage for Microsoft, iOS, and Android Devices | OneDrive Blog

OneDrive is a cloud-based storage service where you can view, browse, upload, and share the files you saved online to OneDrive.com. Store any file on OneDrive and it's automatically available to access or share from any device.

In Windows 8 and Windows RT, OneDrive was available to browse in the OneDrive app and only in File Explorer after installing the OneDrive desktop app.

In Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1, OneDrive is more deeply integrated at the system level. Your OneDrive folders are now displayed in the navigation pane of File Explorer on the desktop for easier access and management in Windows 8.1. In addition, the OneDrive app will still always be available on your Start screen for access since it can no longer be uninstalled in Windows 8.1.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the OneDrive (SkyDrive) folder from the navigation pane of File Explorer for all Microsoft account users in Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to do the steps in this tutorial.

EXAMPLE: "OneDrive" in Navigation Pane of Windows 8.1
SkyDrive_Navigation_Pane.jpg

Here's How:

1. Press the :winkey: +R keys to open the Run dialog, type regedit, and press Enter.
NOTE: You could also open the Start screen, start and finish typing regedit, and press Enter.

2. If prompted by UAC, then click/tap on Yes.

3. In regedit, navigate to the location below. (see screenshot below)

Code:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{8E74D236-7F35-4720-B138-1FED0B85EA75}\ShellFolder
SkyDrive_REG-1.jpg

4. If you have not already, then in the left pane of regedit, take ownership of and set permissions to "Allow" the Administrators group "Full control" of the ShellFolder registry key. (see screenshot above)

5. In the right pane of ShellFolder, double click/tap on Attributes to modify it, then do step 6 or 7 below for what you would like to do. (see screenshot below step 3)

6. To Add "OneDrive" to Navigation Pane in Windows 8.1
NOTE:
This is the default setting.
A) Type in f080004d, click/tap on OK, and go to step 8 below. (see screenshot below
SkyDrive_Default_REG.jpg

B) If you have a 64-bit Windows 8.1 installed go to step 8 below.
C) If you have a 32-bit Windows 8.1 installed go to step 9 below.

7. To Remove "OneDrive" from Navigation Pane in Windows 8.1
A) Type in f090004d, click/tap on OK, and go to step 8 below. (see screenshot below)
Remove_SkyDrive_REG.jpg

B) If you have a 64-bit Windows 8.1 installed go to step 8 below.
C) If you have a 32-bit Windows 8.1 installed go to step 9 below.

8. If you have 64-bit Windows 8.1 Installed

Note   Note
If you have 64-bit Windows 8.1 installed, then you will need to do this step to also add or remove OneDrive from the "Open" and "Save as" type dialog windows.

This step is not available or needed if you have 32-bit Windows 8.1 installed.

A) In regedit, navigate to the location below. (see screenshot below)

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{8E74D236-7F35-4720-B138-1FED0B85EA75}\ShellFolder
B) Repeat steps 4 to 6A/7A above.
C) When finished go to step 9 below.

9. Close regedit, then either sign out and in or restart the computer to apply.

That's it,
Shawn

It's basically the same in Windows 8.1 and Windows 7, except 8.1 changed the take ownership GUI a bit.

Double check using the links in step 4 to see if you may have missed something. Be sure to apply the changes afterwards.

Nothing I do changes permissions. When I ask for permission for user or administrator I am denied. Interestingly enough I have another computer with 8.1 on it and it allows me to make those changes without problems. Don't know what the difference is except the other computer is 8.1 standard and the one that refuses my requests is 8.1 pro

I suppose you indicated that this has been necessary since Windows 7. I used Windows 7 (and still do) since its inception, used Windows XP, used windows Vista (plus many previous versions of windows and pre-windows (DOS)operating systems. I have yet to encounter this particular problem. When I needed permission, it was granted with a simple click. I thought I knew what I was doing, but apparently I have no clue! Thank you for your time and assistance. I am now in the process of restoring the computer on which I was working because many programs failed to work after I tried to do what you were indicating to do in the tutorial.

Sometimes you may only need to change the permissions of these registry keys, but often you may need to take ownership first before you will be able change permissions.

I'm not sure what you may have done differently than in the tutorial by mistake, but the tutorial should not affect anything other than setting the SkyDrive folder group to be hidden in the navigation pane of File Explorer.

I'm sorry you are having to restore. :(

Hello !
Does this affect skydrive's integration into windows and into the office programs ? I just want to make sure since I use this feature a lot, but just don't want to see it appear in my left pane.
Thanks a lot !

Hello Automarkt147, and welcome to Eight Forums.

No. It will only remove OneDrive from the navigation pane of all users, and will not affect it being integrated in the rest of Windows and Office. :)

Brink, I have One-Drive on my File Explorer as well. I only have 1 item in it. Is it true that if you want documents in OneDrive, that you need to save them to it? Also, is OneDrive the new name for Cloud?

Thank you,

Hell Lynn, :)

"Cloud" is a generic term used for when you store files online. "OneDrive" would just be a specific Microsoft service (brand) for this.

It would make it easier to access the files from OneDrive on any PC if the files were saved directly to your OneDrive.

Hi Brink,

Thanks for this.
It seems to have removed the tray icon instantly too - which seems rather odd since I remember reading your other tutorial where it stated (Option Two) "This option will not work in Windows 8.1 Update". KB2923768 was, of course, nowhere to be found on my system, so I'm amazed that this worked for me.

P.S - Your tutorials have been invaluable to me over these past few days (reinstalling my system to optimal functionality). A huge thank you for your help. :D
