Add or Remove OneDrive Notification Area Icon in Windows 8.1

The OneDrive Sync Engine Host notification area icon was introduced with the KB2923768 Windows Update in Windows 8.1, and included with the cumulative Windows 8.1 Update by default.
The OneDrive
notification area icon on the taskbar makes it easier to open OneDrive in File Explorer, view sync problems, and sync status.
This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the OneDrive taskbar notification area icon in Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Update.

This tutorial will show you how to add or remove the OneDrive taskbar notification area icon in Windows 8.1 and Windows 8.1 Update.

The OneDrive notification area icon is only available while signed in to Windows 8.1 with a Microsoft account.
If you sign in to Windows with a local account, then you will not have the OneDrive notification area icon available unless you sign in to the Store with your Microsoft account.
If you sign in to Windows with a local account, then you will not have the OneDrive notification area icon available unless you sign in to the Store with your Microsoft account.

OPTION ONE
Enable or Disable OneDrive Integration to Add/Remove OneDrive Icon

If you do not use OneDrive, then you could disable OneDrive integration in Windows 8.1 or Windows 8.1 Update to completely remove all traces of OneDrive.

OPTION TWO
To Add or Remove OneDrive Notification Area Icon with KB2923768

- You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to do this option.
- This option only applies to Windows 8.1, and will affect all users on the PC.
- This option will not work in Windows 8.1 Update.
1. Do step 2 or 3 below for what you would like to do.
2. To Remove OneDrive Notification Area Icon
A) Uninstall the KB2923768 Windows Update, and restart the computer when prompted.
3. To Add OneDrive Notification Area Icon
NOTE: This is the default setting.
A) Install the KB2923768 Windows Update, and restart the computer when prompted.

If the KB2923768 update is not already installed and unavailable in Windows Update, then you can also manually download and install the 32-bit or 64-bit KB2923768 for your same 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 8.1 at the Microsoft link below.
OPTION THREE
To Hide or Show OneDrive Notification Area Icon
1. Open your Notification Area Icons settings, and do step 2 or 3 below for what you would like to do.
2. To Hide OneDrive Notification Area Icon
A) Uncheck the Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar box. (see screenshot below)
B) For OneDrive Sync Engine Host, select either Hide icon and notifications OR Only show notifications for what you want.
3. To Show OneDrive Notification Area Icon
NOTE: This is the default setting.
A) Check the Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar box. (see screenshot below)
OR
B) Uncheck the Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar box, and select Show icons and notifications for OneDrive Sync Engine Host.
OPTION FOUR
Temporarily Remove OneDrive Notification Area Icon in Task Manager

This option will only affect your user account.
The next time you open the modern OneDrive app or sign in to Windows, the OneDrive notification area icon will return.

1. Open the Task Manager in more details view.
2. In the Processes tab, click/tap on OneDrive Sync Engine Host to select it, and click/tap on the End task button. (see screenshot below)
4. You can now close Task Manager if you like.
OPTION FIVE
To Show OneDrive Notification Area Icon by Running SkyDrive.exe Process

This option is for when your issue is only that the SkyDrive.exe process is not running in the background for the One Drive notification area icon to show.
1. Run the C:\Windows\System32\SkyDrive.exe file.
