Solved OneDrive folder on PC?

Dumb question - what is the purpose of the OneDrive Folder under C:\User\Myname\OneDrive? I know I can save files directly to OneDrive (in the cloud) or I can move/copy stuff to the OneDrive in the cloud. OneDrive then Syncs the cloud stuff to the User OneDrive folder. What's the point? Just a backup or does W8.1 use the Synced information on the local machine (C:\User\Myname\OneDrive) to speed up processing and then Sync it back to the Cloud? I think I like it but just want to understand what is going on. Is there a "white" paper or something that explains in a little more detail I would appreciate the link. Also, does it then make sense to include the OneDrive folder in the Library so that it gets backed up using W8.1's File History function?

The OneDrive folder in Users is the 'Home' folder or the 'mirror' to the Cloud.
There should be a link in your navigation pane, that way you can drag and drop files right on it.
 
It's there for easier navigation. Would you open your browser and upload, or would you like to copy and paste? The answer is quite obvious :)

The tutorials you suggested are for W7 and W8. I have read all your W8.1 tutorials since that is what I'm using and am OK with what is going on once I set OneDrive to make everything available offline. What had me confused is I saved a test file to the OneDrive folder in the File Manager Navigation Window and I thought it did not show up in the C:\Users\Myname\OneDrive folder until I forced a OneDrive Sync. Maybe I was having a senior moment and that did not happen but...! I will move on to using OneDrive on my W7 systems so the tutorials you suggested for W7 and W8 will come in handy.
 
That's ok, I just installed OneDrive on a W7 system and your tutorials came in handy. As a matter of fact, at first blush I think I like the W7/W8 approach better than the W8.1 version. Anyway, Microsoft knows best and I'm sure I'll figure out why I like the imbedded W8.1 version better! Thanks again for the quick responses.
