old games are very slow

Just got done testing the new build 10166. Nothing has changed at all and the problems remain. To the one user who said gta vice city is fixed,it is not fixed. It is still 30 fps.

Oh well. I guess we'll need keeping around an installed XP/7 copy to play old games.
If it is not fixed i won't get Windows 10. I prefer windows 7 too anyways in terms of ui/ux and of course for a variety of gaming. I wouldn't give up on it yet though, they are aware of the issue and could still be trying to fix it. I never expected them to fix the framerate issue with UT 99 and DOOM 1 and 2 not working at all but they did so there is still hope.

Well, I tried two games on win10. Desperados runs at 0-1 FPS closer to 0 if you enable one of the enemies' view. So no improvement.
No One Lives Forever is worse. Doesn't remember settings there's some black flickering covering 2/3 of the screen rendering it unplayable.

Shame on Microsoft. Billion dollar company won't pay a handful of people to write a good compatibility layer for old apis.
Single enthusiast people can implement directdraw over modern directX. Friggin' money hoarders.
I played Desperados through recently with dgVoodoo 2, and it ran almost perfectly. There were some occasional graphic glitches in the menu and that's that.

The last build from the preview and release have no difference so i didn't expect any improvements. There is always a chance that they fix it since they are aware of the issue. I never expected them to fix doom 1 and 2 not working at all and ut 99 having bad framerate but they did. We just have to keep checking when an update comes and they will still keep the feedback app despite the release of W10. The link i usually provide to vote keeps getting higher and almost in the top 10, no way they can miss that. Also the 3rd topic with most votes on gaming also has to do with making older games being better supported.

The feedback app should be there if you have windows 10. Maybe they require you to download it from the MS store now. Just go to start and search for feedback and it should appear. For me it was there in the tiles on the start menu but i had the preview for a while so maybe things changed a bit. Also the other way to contact them is from the users voice website which is the link i usually provide. Here is that link:

I've been having major blackouts on games in past 30 hours. Tried everything, including reinstalling motherboard drivers, vga and other graphic stuff on disk, then even did a none destructive reinstallation of 8.1. To no avail. could not figure it out, so found 10 in my update box and hit the button ......................

It seems that any issues with DirectX8 & older games running slow has been resolved in Windows 10. GTA III, VC etc no longer has the weird stuttering when the frame limiter is switched on. DirectDraw games themselves appear to still have the same issue. Some older games installed from discs no longer launched as support for old versions of SecuROM and SafeDisc have been removed from Windows 10.

The issue is still not fixed. gta 3 and VC still run at 30 fps,use fraps to see.

build 10532 seems to have fixed the gta III framerate issue, now it runs at hundreds of framerate. Other issues remain the same. Progress at least.

You're right, I play these games with the frame limiter ON and just noticed that it doesn't have the annoying Micro Stutter that Windows 8.0/8.1 had but it seems that it's still lower than it should be with the frame limiter on. There is definitely some progress though as the games seemed to run much worse in 8.x than they do in 10.

Pleased to hear it. Thanks for reporting back with the updates Ralf, I'm not in the insider program and I'm running the "stable" version of Windows 10. It's much appreciated that you continue to post updates.

A recent windows blog post directed gamers to a forum where we can give feedback on windows 10 gaming. I posted the issues there and I found the Kevin C guy there again. I am communicating the issues with him, if you want to vouch and help here is the link:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...40ac-a6ad-817a80b5b55a?rtAction=1443122946545

Anyone else that cares to help please visit the link and post about issues there. If you have any games I did not list and know it has issues then please post them. Kevin C is a Microsoft rep and his job is to help on these issues.

Ralf, have you tested any of the more recent builds or are you no longer in the insider programme.

I'm still running the RTM build as I'll wait for the update to be released officially. There is definitely some improvement over Windows 8 but it's not quite there yet, some games are fine others are the same as on 8. It's odd but I really think they're making progress which is good.

Hi everyone, I'm new here. Stumbled on this thread because I had issues with the game Hooligans: Storm over Europe, which relies on Directdraw. It's unplayable on Windows 8.1.

However, reading this thread I noticed that the games would play in Windowed mode. Of course, this will not do any good for games that don't have that built in, but I found a tool for that. I just tried it with Hooligans and it works perfectly. Maybe someone here can use it as well.

The only drawback, obviously, is that you can't play full screen.

Yea I checked out the latest and no improvements in the games. I tweeted out to the MS rep as usual each time I test a new update and dont see improvements.

Yes Frans that is a useful utility which can get round the issue for some games, there's certain things it doesn't work with though.

As always thanks Ralf. When the next version of Windows 10 comes out (Apparently next week) I'll upgrade & also post back on the Microsoft thread.

Any improvement for this on windows 10? Is anyone a tester here, who gets new builds? Is it worth trying out the anniversary update?

BTW is there a thread of a similar vein on tenforums?

Not a big time gamer but don't have many problems with W10. There is Games thread on 10forums. Drop by, I'm there too and lot's of others.
Another thing to try. Make full system backup and upgrade to W10 while it's still free. That way you can try risk free and roll back in few minutes if you want to. That way you reserve right to install W10 on same computer even after July 29th deadline.
P.S. There's DirectX 12 on W10.

I meant an old directx/directdraw games in particular. (The theme of this topic)

I actually tried w10 last year. It sucked so bad that I reverted to windows 8.1 after a few weeks. (I deleted the recovery files by then, so that was another ordeal)

Just got to try out the latest insider build. There are some improvements but some issues are still there as well. Some games that had issues before got fixed but some others did not. So overall it was a decent update but they still need to continue to work on the compatibility. If you want me to try out a specific game and I have it then I can do that.
