Oct 17 -- who's got it (W8.1) - Public release only

I wouldn't be too hopeful. It could be the upgrade asst. is for upgrading from a previous os, and the store d/l is for the long suffering customer who already has win8.0.

I've just tried it, the message I have is...
Windows 8.1 can't be downloaded from here but you can download it from the windows store.
Weather that will change tomorrow is anyone's guess.

I'm not at all hopeful to be honest and yes I agree with your thinking. Oh well, never mind.

If you're not seeing it in the store, you may have to reset it. Close the store, run wsreset.exe and try reopening the store.

Yeah, I don't see it in the store either on my computer. I have KB2871839 installed and have rebooted.

Why can't I find the update in the Store? - Microsoft Windows

Microsoft said:
4.In the list of available updates, select KB 2871839, and any other updates you want to install, then tap or click Install.

Hmmm...not working for me yet. I'm in Michigan in US.

I'm running Windows 8 Pro from OEM (Dell).

Hmmm....found that at work, there were a few other updates that I had not installed or approved via Systems Center on my windows 8 laptop. A check via Windows update showed a few updates were still required. I approved the updates at work, pushed them out to my machine and now do see the Windows 8.1 upgrade tile now. So, it's more than just the update listed. Make sure that you are running all other Windows 8 updates.

Just finish doing 11 updates to 8.1, all clean installs, but did install all 20+ IMPORTANT Windows updates first.

As I crossed my fingers, I did the download and install. Some "different" prompts on the screen, "installing a few things, installing a few more things, HI etc". I have dual screens, some processes were on #1 screen, while others were on #2 screen, but 1 hr and 10 minutes.... seems to function normally. Noticed "windows.old", how long are you keeping that around??

dl'd about 6pm ,just a few little niggles, im not keen on the merging of the explorer library window with "this pc"
preferred the old school way, but there will always be things we prefer the old way, we wouldnt have progress if no one tried a new way.

Hasn't worked for me I'm afraid (8 64 Pro to 8.1 Pro). Three hours to download and about half an hour to configure to end up with the dreaded black screen. After a manual reboot, Windows restored itself back to v8. I think my problem is down to the Nvidia Graphics card updates in that I find it impossible to upgrade the drivers whether it be in XP or v8. I forgot my little trick of pulling the network cable whilst Windows configures itself. Oh well, onward and upwards:(

edit: Now working! It was a graphic card driver problem. The update to 8.1 forces upon you the very latest driver version. My card is an older 9800GT which isn't fully supported and hasn't been for some time. Solution - install driver version 295.73 from 2012. Hope this helps someone.

Got it to run in my virtual partition. The download was very slow the first 2 hours (20%) but then all of a sudden it went very fast. The setup was not very fast either, but on this system the virtual partition has only two 2.4GHz cores and 2GBs of RAM. I did not notice any hickups yet except that it did not seem to be able to find any updates. Maybe they come automatically.

ok for those of you that want to see the libraries when you click the explorer icon on the taskbar, then open explorer click view /navigation pane and click show libraries.
when you next open explorer it will open again with the libraries window instead of "this PC"

so far all 3 pcs went fine installing windows 8.1 pro, laptop had a little glitch but I fixed it, tablet went amazing, which I thought that was going to be the worst one, this is a asus vivo tablet 64 gigs running windows 8, in fact I found it is faster now then it was before and I had 30gigs to start prior to the install, and after doing the disk cleanup I still wound up with 30 gigs, not bad
Interesting, one of the desktop pcs went from windows xp pro to Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 8 and now windows 8.1 with not even a bump.
I have two older test laptops to do tomorrow.
Each machine (1 did 2 at the same time, and when done downloading I did the next 2, etc etc) took 2/1 hours from start to finish

Which ISO did you download there Jimbo? Windows 8.1 (multiple editions) (x64) - DVD (English) is the one I want but I don't see a new version of that one.

As far as I can see, the 8.1 X64 was uploaded to Technet on 8/15/13. I don't believe newer ones will be uploaded, since they'll all be the RTM version.

I have the ISO; now hoping I can get the update key and use the ISO.

After reading this entire thread, I haven't seen anything that would tell me if I can get a key for my upgrade and use the ISO I downloaded awhile back. I have an HP Pavilion 500-056 with Windows 8 pre-installed and a self built PC dual booting Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Shore would like ta use that ISO . . .

Also, I have a friend who has the same HP I have. She wanted the Classic Shell installed on hers. Will that do anything to mess up things with Windows 8.1?

Of course, I'll have to go to League City, some 91 miles South to install 8.1 for her.

I see the update in the store but I am in no hurry to install it. My Windows 8 laptop and netbook are running fine without it so I'll wait for the dust to settle before I consider installing it. I have the run the preview as well as RTM in a VM and haven't seen anything in 8.1 that makes me in a hurry to do the upgrade.

Like you I'm in no hurry. Waiting until Nov 14 to let the hiccups be exposed and updated. Give MS time to reconsider making ISO available.

It does sound like 8.1 uses power & space mgmt better. Plus tile mgmt.

Yeah, all of the Enterprise and VL editions have had new ISO's added as of 10/17/2013. It just made we wonder why only those? They changed something? When I saw those I had a look for the regular version and saw it was still dated 9/9/2013. It's no big deal I have that one and the keys for it. Its just nice to have the newest one on hand so I went looking. The talk on the rollup update made me think they may release a newer version.

hi guys,

i read here that in order to get the update one has to return back to Windows 8.0 which i find ridiculous.

Am on Windows 8.1 Beta and am not going through the effort.

But on the MS site it says one can upgrade from Beta to Preview, so which is it.

thanks

Jeff
