Solved Numerous event id 10016 errors win 8 pro 64 bit

Don't reinstall - you'll just end up in the same place. I actually saw this on my own machine, and something is messing with security. To put it back to the way it should be (and have it work), do the following, in this order:

12. Click the "Security" tab, and click the "Edit" button in the "Launch and Activation Permissions" section:
View attachment 10561

Cluberti - love the clear graphical instructions!
I get a very similar error message to donaldormond here:
The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{C2F03A33-21F5-47FA-B4BB-156362A2F239}
and APPID
{316CDED5-E4AE-4B15-9113-7055D84DCC97}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE SID (S-1-5-19) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

I (foolishly?) followed your step by step instructions and all went well until Step12. The "Edit" buttons are greyed out and none of the "Use Default" or "Customize" buttons are selected - nor can I select them. I retraced my steps and all's good (i.e. machine still working as well as ever). Is there a simple fix you might be able to suggest?

Hi Teaboy

The error you are getting is slightly different to the one on the first page that is why it is greyed out. Read my last two posts and you will have your error fixed in no time :)

Fixed! - Thank you SayJimWoo

Worked a treat! Thank you so much. I'm in awe of you guys who know the answers to these issues - I wouldn't have a clue WHERE to start.

After carrying out your instructions and rebooting I had about 6 or 7 similar but different to the original one. :eek:
So I rebooted again. This time only 1 error - different to the original and much less scary looking.

After the 3rd reboot - no errors.

Just one comment on your instructions: After step 14 I right-clicked and selected 'properties'. I wonder if you accidently omitted this little step, because I notice your instructions jump from 14 to 16

Also, in step 16 I interpreted your instruction as "Click security tab then click Customise in the Launch and Activation permissions section. Click Edit. Click Add. In the "Enter the object names to select" box type "Local Service". Click OK.

This seemed to work - can you confirm that my interpretation is correct?
Thanks

EDIT. The post should be correct now, I must have deleted a step by mistake. Thanks again for spotting it.

I have been having exactly the same issue with a bunch of new Windows 8.1 machines. I tried the solution above, but at point 12 the options were all greyed out. I am a member of the local administrators group, so should have the appropriate permissions. What am I missing?

Thanks,

Ivan

Hi Ivan, if you followed the illustrated directions on page ONE of this thread, that is for a different error to the one I was facing so the instructions are slightly different although the fix method is the same. Is your error the same as mine and are you seeing these values in the event viewer?

CLSID
{C2F03A33-21F5-47FA-B4BB-156362A2F239}
and APPID
{316CDED5-E4AE-4B15-9113-7055D84DCC97}

If so, then if you followed my fix to the letter (got all the correct permissions) the "Immersive Shell" options in component services shouldn't be greyed out.

Make sure when you are in the DCOM config that you pick "Immersive Shell" :)

Thanks so much: yes, that was the error, and Immersive Shell permissions were the ones that needed to be changed. Errors now gone, computer back to running properly again.

Cluberti, All is well until one must "type in the user name from your error dialog *exactly* as it appears in the error dialog from the event viewer." Here is the event viewer readout...

The machine-default permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission for the COM Server application with CLSID
{C2F03A33-21F5-47FA-B4BB-156362A2F239}
and APPID
{316CDED5-E4AE-4B15-9113-7055D84DCC97}
to the user NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE SID (S-1-5-19) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container Unavailable SID (Unavailable). This security permission can be modified using the Component Services administrative tool.

-0-
As you can see, there's no name to type. And no portion of "NT AUTHORITY\LOCAL SERVICE SID (S-1-5-19)" is accepted.
Thoughts?

Follow these instructions to the letter and your problem will be 100% resolved :)

1. Open Regedit.
2. Go to HKEY_Classes_Root\CLSID\*CLSID*.
Note: *CLSID* stand for the ID that appears in your event viewer error. In your case, it's {C2F03A33-21F5-47FA-B4BB-156362A2F239}.
3. Right click on it then select permission.
4. Click Advance and change the owner to Administrators. Also click the box that will appear below the owner line.
5. Apply full control.
6. Close the tab then go to HKEY_LocalMachine\Software\Classes\AppID\*APPID*.
Note: *AppID* is the ID that appears in your event viewer. In your case it's {316CDED5-E4AE-4B15-9113-7055D84DCC97}.
7. Right click on it then select permission.
8. Click Advance and change the owner to Administrators.
9. Click the box that will appear below the owner line.
10. Click Apply and grant full control to Administrators.
11. Close all tabs and go to Administrative tool.
12. Open component services.
13. Click Computer, click my computer, then click DCOM.
14. Now look for "Immersive Shell".
15. Right click on it then click properties.
16. Click security tab then click Customize in the Launch and Activation permissions section. Click Edit. Click Add. Add Local Service. Then apply.
17. Tick the Local Activation box.

Thanks for the helpful guide clubert, it was very helpful in fixing the log entry on one Windows 8.1 installation but I'm unable to complete the steps on another installation as WPN Srumon Server doesn't appear in the dcom config window.

I've changed ownership of the registry key to administrators and applied full control in permissions.

Any suggestions please?

Tried sfc /scannow but no change. Still no WPN Srumon Server in dcom config.

Not sure what to try next....repair install?

If you go to Administrative Tools and into Component Services and manually search for WPN Srumon Server is it no longer there in the list?

Search for it via the start menu (I use start8 with my Windows 8.1) or go into control panel (view by small icons) and click Administrative Tools then click Component Services - My Computer - DCOM Config then scroll down the bottom of the list to find WPN Srumon.

I thought you were implying that the Component Services snap-in had a search function.

I'm aware on how to start to snap in from the command line but WPN Srumon Server was not present in the list of applications.

Ran out of options so decided to reinstall...WPN Srumon Server is there now so problem solved :) Just a shame that it took such a drastic measure to resolve.

Thanks for the replies.

This is absolutely bizarre?!?

I started to notice the same error popping up in the event log again so I double checked the permissions on the registry key. They were still good so I thought I'd check the permissions on WPN Srumon Server in dcom config and low and behold, it's disappeared again!!

Does anyone have any suggestions on what could cause this please?

...and again. Fresh installation of Windows 8.1. Thought I'd install a few apps at a time and reboot and test whether WPN Srumon Server is still present. After installing, I changed permissions of the registry key then edited permissions of WPN Srumon Server in dcomcnfg.

Installed some drivers, rebooted - fine.
Installed my apps in batches and after completing - fine.
Ran Windows Updates and WPN Srumon Server is gone from dcom config after rebooting.
