Solved Not sure where to put this: Trying to Dupe a Hard Drive

I'm using Partition Wizard Home v 7.8.

I know the source drive has a small area with bad spots that show up as "Not Ready" (error NRDY) when I used ViVard to try to block them off, most of the bad sectors got moved but there are a few sectors near the beginning of the drive that just stall up. Vivard ran all the way through and blocked most of it off. and the drive works, although it stalls up now and then.

I'm duping the whole drive, it started no problem but it has been stuck at 6% for about 30 minutes now.

The only other cloning program I got is an old version of Paragon, if I made a Paragon recovery disk, would that work? I need something that will just move on if it finds bad spots.

Ok, my old version of Paragon 8 won't launch, I found a trial for a newer version, it allowed me to make a recovery CD.

I'm trying "Raw Copy" for the HDD data, will that work to get over the bad spots?

I have great experience with acronis TIH its what i use for all my personal things, and you could get the trial to dupe it but instead of duping it i would just tell it to backup though and do it by disk not partition and when it finds a bad sector it should warn you then let you pass over it from my experience. PC backup software | Acronis True Image if your gonna try to restore it on anything make sure you also download the bootable media so you can do it.

Great, if this fails, I'll do that, I'll download it. My Problem was finding a Paragorn Trial that would run in Windows 8, I found version 9, the Loader failed, but the program started by clicking on the program itself in Program files. I used it to make the recovery CD, and I'm trying the raw data copy.

I've used Acronis Dick Director in the past, to varying results, but I lost the boot CD I had.

The problem with the drive, is that it has four major partitions on it, including a Bootloader that handles the OS and the Recovery fartition. I basically only need the OS partition, but if I copied just that, it would not boot.

Great - Its downloading, will this trial make a Recovery CD?

I've been running the paragorn recovery, the Raw Copy seemed to have worked, it is ALMOST done copying, been running almost 6 hours. I have the Acronis Boot Disk just in case.

The Paragon Raw Copy finished around 11:00 last night. It was a perfect copy, even copied the disk errors, and a CHKDSK fixed them and put the files back into their folders. With all of the bad sectors, there really were only a few Installation Files corrupted, for some Lenovo programs. ALL FIXED.

it was a copy from a Hitachi/Lenovo 160 GB Drive to a 320 WD Scorpio Black 7200 rpm drive. Absolutely beautiful drive found on eBay for 30 bucks.

There were four partitions, one hidden, and I was able to use Partition Wizard 7.6 to shunt the small partitions to the very end of the drive, which I did all in one step. Then it allowed me to increase the size of the OS partition to full size. The version of Paragon I found in a stack of CDs was 9.0, build 4156 (21.01.08 ) Professional

And it can't be started in Windows 8 from the link, you have to find the Launcher.exe in the /Program folder of it's directory. I originally had 8.5 from when this was Windows 7. I created the recovery medium and used that to start the program from the boot CD.

I suppose this can be done with any newer version of Paragon, but it is no longer Partition Manager, it is something else- Or Acronis TI or Disk Director.

So if anyone has a hard drive that has any major NDRY error on it, of it is only in a few sectors, ViVard can get the drive readable, and Paragon's Raw Disk copy will move what can be moved.

This is about the 6th hard Drive I've recovered and moved this year and I've been able to save the existing data on all of them. I know this solution requires some paid software, but it is the best one I could find.

NP - ViVard is on Hiren's Boot CD, but you can get it from HERE:

It really has saved many drives I would have had to otherwise throw away, at least it got me able to copy the partitions, its a fine program and works for all kinds of Drives and OSes. The main thing to remember is that once you start it, you cannot lose power or have your PC shut off, it takes roughly 4 hours to run. If you shut it off, then you will lose the drive. There is no "cancel".

So set up a UPC if you are worried, that should give you enough time to hook up a gas generator heh.
