Not getting speeds I am paying for... Even during NON-peak

Hey everyone,

I have been having trouble with my network. I recently, (2 days ago), upgraded my cable high speed internet service from 2mbps down and .2 mbps up to 15 mbps down and 2 mbps up. However, even during non peak hours, pretty much all the time, the best download speed I can get is 4-5mbps. My upload speed stays where it should, at 2mbps. It is really only my download speed I am concerned about, because this happens every day all day. When I first upgraded the service, I got 12-13 mbps download speed, so something must have happened between then and now where I cant receive that anymore. My modem is a doscis 2, not 3, so I am not sure if that has anything to do with it. It is an Arris TM602G/15 model. But as I said, I have received close to the full download speeds before, but not anymore.

Any help? Thanks! :D

Try contacted the service provider again ? They should have technicians to be able to check it for you. Could also be a line problem, did you add anymore lines to your cable lines inside ?

How are you testing it, where ? Did you change any other settings on PC. Windows does all optimizations for you.

Try resetting the modem, unplug it for 15 seconds, then plug back in. Or unplug and reboot PC. Usually a way to reset the modem back to factory state, need to check your service providers website for your model modem to be able to access it's settings. Usually you type in an address in your browser to access it.

Hey jds63, thanks for the reply! I did not add any more lines to my cable, and I am testing it at speedtest.net and the speed test provided by my service provider. I did not change any other settings on the PC, as all of the PC's on my home network experience these slower speeds. I was able to get to the Arris settings page, but cant login, as I forgot the password and dont have the manual. Also tried rebooting pc.

I think your problem is with the services provider. Don't think there is much we can help with unless you changed something on your system you haven't mentioned.

Thanks fr the rep popeye! I only started experiencing these speeds by later friday, (which is the day I upgraded my package), because at first on friday I was indeed getting the advertised speeds, or close enough to it. But by friday night, my download speeds decreased to 4mbps, so maybe it's just the weekend internet cluster? If it doesnt go up tomorrow (monday), then I am not sure what else to do as I cant contact my service provider (I'm 14), and my parents probably wont.

Ok, now this is weird but I am not going to question it haha. I am now getting almost the exact speeds I am paying for during PEAK hours on Sunday. How weird is that. I guess because most people go back to work tomorrow and are not using the bandwidth in the area.

Your welcome.
Same i was saying originally, probably an issue with the service provider, but can try a factory reset or just unplug for 15 seconds.

Someone has the user name and password at home there, if you are all experiencing it, just have someone call them they will help you resolve it. Not going to tell you to do it, cause your a minor, but as long as you have the account number.

To me that does not sound like a resolve, but if you like it to. Cable companies use different system through there wiring then others, like phone companies. Something with nodes covering certain amount of people in an area. Not sure still like this, but could cause bandwidth loss.

Probably why i love Fiber right to the home with Phone company.

Typical "Oversold Bandwidth", either in the network or their server, just can't cope with demand. To drop a bit (10 -20%) could be understandable but to drop more is inexcusable.

There's another thing to consider when on internet and that is Internet Providers connection to the rest of internet. IP can give you fast connection to his server, you could be downloading even from fast server but downloading from that site could be much slower. "Tracert" to a particular site is sure way to find where it could be "stumbling".
The route to some site can can be thru multiple IPs just to go thru provider's router and server, then there could be another, main provider yours is actually renting bandwidth from and only than you are actually on internet proper. Then your data has to go thru multiple nodes to get to a place you have to download something. Even than it's not finished yet. Data has to be retrieved from it's server and pass multiple places justu to start traveling to you. At that time it's divided in multiple packets that travel various routes just to be put together again on your disk. Each packet has it's own "checksum" and if it's not right (not same as original one) it has to be sent again until right. All of that and more affects your actual "internet speed experience".
So you can have (in theory) super fast connection to your provider but still wait for hours to do, let's say, windows update.

Had the same a while back ,the result after I contacted the provider, was that a 'tweak' at their end wasn't tweaked. It was fixed. At present I am on 120mb download and 11-12 upload. It was on 150mb but apprently I was in the midst of an area test program and it went back to 120MB, but even on that I am still getting 114 - 125 download.

Now in the summer holidays, with millions of little darlings online playing games, it has suffered a bit, went down to 76 at one stage. But I should be back up to 150MB from November.

Set your speedtest.net to different servers all around the world and see what speeds you are getting from them.

You can move map on the speedtest.net, something like on Google Earth and pick any spot marked on it to reach any spot on earth. Bet you'll get some wildly different results.

Virgin Media

Hi there

By the time they've finished blocking about 95% of the sites on the Internet they probably will get a decent speed. Any type of Football streaming or TV services seems to be blocked on Virgin Media --they are even more restrictive than B.T (Bovine Telecomms).

However that's probably a topic for another post -- going through decent proxies doesn't drop the speed by much on B.T in Manchester which is where I usually stay in the UK. (So I can still get my "Live footie" streams etc). SKY Broadband seems to work reasonably well in the UK with some good cheap offers. Talk Talk is another one like Virgin Media that seems to block every "interesting" site around -- and I'm not referring to "Porno" or "adult" sites. No probs with blocking kid abuse type of sites either but the whole "Internet Blocking" system has gone totally mad in the UK - which makes it useless as people get round it. If they were sensible then the restrictions would work as people wouldn't bother just to access one or two sites.

Cheers
jimbo

Like it or not, streaming footy is illegal and against copyright. Shut downs on streamer sites happened almost daily. Until the UK remove the pathetic licence fee for funding the BBC who are the main source of anti copyright, then blocking will continue. Its long over due for the BBC to go commerical, or die. Its past its sell by date and run by gay far leftie pinko fags.
