What's new

No Windows 9

HippsieGypsie

It's Gururrrrrr8!
OldGuyGeek:

In Windows 10, you can switch between the Start Menu and the Start Screen. But for right now, you have to log off and log back in again to do it. As others have said, you can run all the Windows 8 apps from the new Start Menu, but I would like to have both available at the same time. Case in point, if I am out and about on my Yoga, I make want to use the Start Screen but when I have it in laptop mode, I may want to use the Start Menu.

Well i could live with that, but isn't it better to wait for Windows9, because for Windows 10 i must know if compatible with Windows 8 computers.

thanks

Jeff

Yes H.G.

i read the tutorial, but what is the advantage for me to install with UEFI, does this improve the computer or what.

I ask this because i have 256 gb with Windows on, but a smaller partition has my main folders which i really do need.

So if i have to remove everything, i hate that, even when i have 3 B.U. already.

If there is no advantage, i will not use something i do not need.

thanks

Jeff

Jeff you are probably correct for yourself, Faster systems with SSD etc. do benefit and some of the newer motherboards come with graphical UEFI/BIOS with many many Options .You have to have UEFI to use secure boot there are benefits that I don't have an understanding of. I have UEFI on my Notebook came with it and the wife's HP touchscreen also came with it. its not available on my WS running Asus P7P55-E Pro boards however these board do support GPT somehow as I put in a 3TB internal hard drive for back ups and it automatically installed as GPT

Fully Customizable

Doesn't the Windows 7 Start menu have a bunch of other stuff on the right side, various functions and ways to access parts of the OS (control panel, devices, documents, etc.), that would now be occupied by the live tiles in Windows 10? So the live tiles are going to take their place, and that won't be coming back? Or are they going to manage to put all that stuff in there somehow so we have the best of both worlds?

Your speaking of My Computer, Control Panel, My Docs, etc that was on the right side of the Start Menu. Not sure if they will, but they don't have to be live tiles. I would think you could create tiles of any of those links to place there instead so to be similar.

I haven't got 10 installed yet, for I'm having hardware problems.

True. 10 comes with Documents, Pictures, PC Settings and File Explorer as your default entries just under your name. But you can add most stuff to this section. For example, since it was in the Window 7 menu, I dragged music from the music icon in file explorer and hovered over the start icon. Moved it up into the top section where it displayed the 'pin to start menu'. Of course it worked as you would expect.

However, I tried to do the same for the Control Panel, but it wouldn't let me drop it there. But I could drop in into the tile area. It created a square tile that can be handled like any other tile, just with two sizes, small and medium. But, if you use the old way, you can go into the Taskbar Navigation properties and click on the Start Menu tab. Then choose the Customize button at the bottom.

Screenshot (6).png

It seems to me to be a more robust version of the Start Menu. You can customize it quite a bit. You can even drag the top of it to make it larger so you can see more tiles. Of course, that could get overdone as well. Or you could eliminate most of the tiles leaving you with a single column. Look familiar???

well install went smooth. Did not take much time, strange from an USB stick.

Anyway UEFI is now ok, but I do not get 4 partitions, one is missing...strange, should be 3 system partitions, but no only 2...do not ask me why.

But Windows 10 is certainly faster then Windows 8.1.

Now if Stardock could make the Objectdock to work here, I can hide the very very old taskbar....

But I am happy with Windows 10, next will be Windows 20 I guess....

That's gotta be the most awkward start menu I've ever seen. To shut down, you've got to click on Start, then drag your mouse all the way to the top to get at the power button...

It seems to me to be a more robust version of the Start Menu. You can customize it quite a bit. You can even drag the top of it to make it larger so you can see more tiles. Of course, that could get overdone as well. Or you could eliminate most of the tiles leaving you with a single column. Look familiar???

Thanks for that, OldGuyGeek! :thumb: Just as I suspected that 10 would be the most configurable OS to date. The Start Menu is, well, just a start. :D

May I suggest WinKey > Down arrow key > Enter > Enter? That should be shut down which should be the first item in that menu.

Perhaps they should move it to the bottom and expose the Shut Down button as they did in 7. WinKey > Right arrow > Enter. :)

Got 10 on a HP laptop. Downloaded the iso and installed with net disconnected, no need for any ms registration. Installed very fast. Went online and got updates & it quickly found all needed drivers, everything works. Technically, stable and very positive.

About the new functions, will see over time. Nice to get a semblance of a real start menu (they finally adjusted to reality!), and nice to be able to have (cr)apps in windows, may even maybe find a few of them useful some day, although (from a pc\keyboard\mouse standpoint) am still finding (most of) them to be anemic & pale ghosts of real programs (of course can be useful on tablets). & IE fonts still looks like mud compared to other browsers.

Most importantly: my stock trading program, Photoshop, Classic Shell & Firefox works, so all is fine :p

OlGuyGeek,

you lost me, what do you mean with the Control Panel?

You can just pin it to start or taskbar, if that is what you want.
