I was working on my computer editing music when suddenly all sound stopped. If I go into the sound mixer from the taskbar there is nothing listed under applications under speakers. If I plug headphones in sometimes Chrome shows up under applications, sometimes it doesn't.

Right now headphones are not plugged in but Chrome is still listed under headphones and not speakers. Earlier today it wasn't playing music through the headphones either. There doesn't seem to be any pattern for this to happen.

I have already updated all drivers, restarted the computer multiple times and run diagnostics from Dell's website (the computer is a Dell Inspiron N5110). the audio diagnostic failed at the microphone testing stage and wouldn't let me get any further with the tests. I have even performed a boot-scan with Avast Antivirus to make sure it's not a virus that is messing with my system, but to no avail.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Check the Sound devices listing in the Device Manager. What is the status that is shown for IDT HD Audio? Does it show as working OK, or is there an error code (post the code).

If it shows working OK, RIGHT click on the IDT entry to highlight it and then LEFT click "Uninstall" DO NOT uninstall the drivers. Restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the audio. This fixes any corruptions and hopefully will fix yours.

It says the device is working properly.

Edit: I did what you said and they're working again! Do you have any idea what might have triggered this? It has happened once before and I thought it was some kind of bug with Skype on 8.1 (which is the program I was using when it happened the first time), but this time I was using Adobe Audition CS6. Luckily it happened after I finished all of the music editing I was doing, or I would have missed my deadline XP

Thank you so much!
