No Audio or Sounds from Speakers or Headphone Jack after upgrade to Windows 8










Compaq Presario CQ60-615DX


Processor:
Intel Celeron 900 @ 2.20Ghz 2.12GHz x64 bit

OS:
Windows 8.1 Pro

Audio Driver/Sound Processor:
Conexant Pebble High Definition SmartAudio 4.126.0.62 Windows 7 64-bit
Realtek High Definition Audio Driver 6.0.1.6914 / 5.10.0.6914 Windows 8 64-bit



The Laptop originally ran on Windows 7 and I updated the OS to windows 8
and upon doing this the audio stopped completely from all audio sources (ie windows sounds,speakers,line- in/heaphone jack)

I tried Disable/Reenable driver,Rollback driver,uninstall/reinstall and discovered that the driver is not supported for windows 8.
Upon learning this I have tried other Audio Drivers (i.e. Realtek HD Drivers etc) and no avail.

I’ve recently updated to Windows 8.1 and it auto reinstalled the original audio driver and still, no sound.
I have also checked all Audio Codecs and still no luck even going that route.

When I play an mp3 on let’s say wmplayer the volume bar will move up and down with the levels of the song that’s playing as per usual but I get no sound.
Volume level can be at 100% and there won’t be any noise at all, no distortion, white noise, just silence.

This happens no matter how sound is being produced music, videos, games, internet, windows sounds etc… And trying to get audio from headphone jack doesn’t work either.

Does anyone know of any solutions to the out of date driver issue I am having? Seems that the driver not being compatible with win 8.1 is where the errors began. Is there a fix for this or am I best off getting a usb audio driver and running my sound that route?

Which do you have? The Conexant or RealTek? You must have the correct driver. e.g. the RealTek will not work with the Conexant, or the Conexant will not work with RealTek hardware.

8.1 does have some compatibility problems with some devices. Its sporadic and not all is affected. But, if it didn't work with Win 8, it may not be an 8.1 problem. In most cases (actually all that I've seen) Vista/Win 7 sound drivers work with Windows 8. (In my case I have RealTek and the Windows 7 drivers are compatible with Win 8 and Win 8.1).

One other thing to check is the Default Audio Playback device. Assuming you have the correct sound driver installed, the "Speakers" (PC's sound card) should be set as the default audio playback device. If HDMI or Digital is set, the speakers will not work.

Conexant Audio Driver

Currently I am using The Conexant High Definition SmartAudio Driver Provided By hp Support Website.

I UnInstalled the Realtek Driver I had downloaded as it Didn't fix the sound issue and have rolled back systems drivers to the original conexant driver.

I have it enabled and set as the default audio playback device. Audio is Unmuted and Volume at 100%.
All Audio Codecs are up to date and working.

Uninstall the Conexant sound in the Device Manager. RIGHT click on the entry for the Conexant to highlight it and then LEFT click "uninstall". Do not uninstall the drivers. Then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. If there were any Windows corruptions with the sound, this will fix it.

Restore to Win7?

Thanks for suggestion, I tried this way of reinstalling sound numerous times having no success restoring sound.
None of the usual audio/driver fixes seem to work on this.....thing.:mad:


Is it possible that it is a motherboard issue? or possibly the speakers are broken and that caused the headphone jack to malfunction also?

The original owner of the notebook says she had sound when she purchased it and the only changes made that would effect audio was the windows update and some time in the future she realized she had no audio.
Starting to worry that a rollback to win7 :eek:might be the only help if she claims it had audio then. maybe it's possible that the conexant drivers dont intergrade with win8 on this product.

I found this doing a search. If you are not "Eric" then others have the same problems in Windows 8, and falling back to Windows 7 looks like the answer.

would like to report a bug when using the Conexant Pebble High Definition Smart Audio Driver in Windows 8.
First, a bit of background:

Product Name/Number - HP Pavilion G60-635DX
Operating System - Windows 8 Professional x64 (Build 9200)
Sound Driver / Version - Conexant Pebble High Definition Smart Audio (Version 4.98.60.50)
BIOS - Latest version


This is a unique situation due to the fact that the Conexant sound driver installs fine in Windows 8 and shows all signs that the device is working properly:

1. You receive a speaker icon (Without red X) on the task bar.

2. No device conflicts in device manager

3. Device properties show device is 'Working Properly'


Here is the issue, I decided to do an in-place upgrade to Windows 8 from Windows 7 and the process went fine, however when I was up and running in Windows 8, I was receiving no audio. I uninstalled and reinstalled the device driver, I uninstalled and reinstalled the sound controller and I also disabled and re-enabled the services that are responsible for Windows sound. I also ran the Microsoft troubleshooting wizard for fixing audio issues in Windows 8. The wizard was unable to find any issues.


Finally, I decided to do a full wipe/format of the system and install from scratch. This still did not fix the issue. I know for a fact my physical speakers are functioning because they were working in the Windows 7 instance.


I have been doing research and I'm finding that other people are having similar issues with other Conexant drivers in Windows 8. I call this a bug because the driver shows all signs of compatibility, however no sound is produced.


I cannot seem to find any solutions to this issue so I have resulted in going back to Windows 7 where my sound is currently working. If there are no solutions to this problem, I would appreciate if an administrator can forward this report to the necessary parties so a solution can be developed.

Thanks for sharing. no I'm not eric but i am having 100% exact same issue. so it appears its a bug issue and rollback/revert to win7 wont fix after upgrade to 8 is made so I will try USB audio driver and see if audio is accessible that route, will check back this eveing and let you know.

After re reading this i now see he does say the rollback to 7 is a fix. I am going to try the usb driver route if no prevail then i will try this option. I would prefer to use win8.1 but if I have to sacrifice to get sound than its a must! thanks again.
